Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: One day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed a prayer in which he lengthened its standing, its bowing and its prostration. When he had finished, I said: O Messenger of Allah! You prayed a prayer in which you lengthened its standing, its bowing and its prostration. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It was a prayer of longing and fear. In it I asked my Lord for three things; He granted me two and withheld one from me. I asked Him not to give power over my nation to an enemy from other than themselves who would uproot them, and He granted me that. I asked Him not to impose upon them a famine that would destroy them through hunger, and He granted me that too. And I asked Him not to let their violence be among themselves, and He withheld that from me and kept it back from me."
