When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had led us in Fajr, he said: "Last night I prayed what was decreed for me, then I laid my side down in the mosque (that is, I slept), and my Lord came to me in the best of forms and said: O Muhammad! Do you know what the highest assembly (al-Mala' al-A'la) is disputing about? I said: No, O my Lord! He asked this three times, and (each time) I said: No, O my Lord! Then He placed His hand between my shoulders, and I felt its coolness in my chest, and everything became clear to me and I recognised it. So I said: (They are disputing) about the ranks and the expiations. He said: What are the ranks? I said: Feeding others, spreading the greeting of peace, and praying at night while people are asleep. He said: You have spoken the truth. Then He said: What are the expiations? I said: Performing ablution thoroughly in the cold, waiting for one prayer after another, and walking to the Friday prayers. He said: You have spoken the truth. Then He said: Ask, O Muhammad! I said: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'l al-khayrat, wa tark al-munkarat, wa hubb al-masakin, wa an taghfira li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta bayna 'ibadika fitnatan faqbidni ilayka wa ana ghayru maftun. O Allah, I ask You for Your love, the love of whoever loves You, and the love of a deed that brings me closer to Your love)."
