Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was held back from coming to us for the Fajr prayer for so long that the sun was about to rise. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) had led us in Fajr, he said: "Last night I prayed what was decreed for me, then I laid my side down in the mosque (that is, I slept), and my Lord came to me in the best of forms and said: O Muhammad! Do you know what the highest assembly (al-Mala' al-A'la) is disputing about? I said: No, O my Lord! He asked this three times, and (each time) I said: No, O my Lord! Then He placed His hand between my shoulders, and I felt its coolness in my chest, and everything became clear to me and I recognised it. So I said: (They are disputing) about the ranks and the expiations. He said: What are the ranks? I said: Feeding others, spreading the greeting of peace, and praying at night while people are asleep. He said: You have spoken the truth. Then He said: What are the expiations? I said: Performing ablution thoroughly in the cold, waiting for one prayer after another, and walking to the Friday prayers. He said: You have spoken the truth. Then He said: Ask, O Muhammad! I said: 'Allahumma inni as'aluka fi'l al-khayrat, wa tark al-munkarat, wa hubb al-masakin, wa an taghfira li wa tarhamani, wa idha aradta bayna 'ibadika fitnatan faqbidni ilayka wa ana ghayru maftun. Allahumma inni as'aluka hubbaka, wa hubba man yuhibbuka, wa hubba 'amalin yuqarribuni ila hubbik' (O Allah, I ask You for the doing of good deeds, the abandoning of evil deeds, and love of the poor, and that You forgive me and have mercy on me; and when You intend a trial among Your servants, take me to You without my having been put to trial. O Allah, I ask You for Your love, the love of whoever loves You, and the love of a deed that brings me closer to Your love)." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Learn them and study them, for they are true."
