It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), and through several other narrators from al-Hasan (al-Basri) (may Allah have mercy on him), that when the verse of debt (the verse about loans) was revealed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The first to deny was Adam (peace be upon him). When Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, created him, He passed His hand over his back and brought out his offspring, and everyone who is to be created until the Day of Resurrection. Then He began presenting them to Adam (peace be upon him), and he saw among them a man with a radiant face, and said: 'O my Lord, which of my sons is this?' Allah said: 'This is your son Dawud.' He said: 'O my Lord, how long is his life?' He said: 'Sixty years.' He said: 'O my Lord, increase his life.' He said: 'No, unless you add to it from your own life.' Adam's (peace be upon him) life was a thousand years, so he gave forty years of his life to him as a gift. The narrator said: So a document was written against him concerning that, and the angels were made witnesses to it. Then when death came to Adam (peace be upon him), the angels came to take his soul, and he said: 'Forty years of my life still remain.' It was said: 'You gave them as a gift to your son Dawud.' He said: 'I did not do that; I did not give him anything.' So Allah sent down the document and the angels bore witness to it, and Allah completed for Adam (peace be upon him) a full thousand years, and completed for Dawud (peace be upon him) a hundred years."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) relates: A man came to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: A woman came to me to buy and sell, so I took her into a secluded place, reached out my hand to her, sought to seduce her, and did everything with her except intercourse. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Woe to you! Perhaps her husband is away (from home). He said: Yes. He said: Go to Abu Bakr and ask him. So he went to him and said the same thing he had said to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he too said: Woe to you! Perhaps her husband is away. Then he came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said to him too the same thing he had said to Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: "Woe to you! Perhaps her husband is away (from home) in the path of Allah." He said: Yes. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent, and this verse was revealed: "Establish prayer at the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night" [Surah Hud: 114] to the end of the verse. At this the man said: O Messenger of Allah, is this for me alone or for people in general? Upon that Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) raised his hand and struck him on the chest and said: No, by Allah, and there is no special honour (for you); rather it is for all people in general. At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed and said: "Umar has spoken the truth."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) relates: In the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) we recited this verse in this way for two years: "And those who do not call upon another god along with Allah, nor kill a soul which Allah has made sacred except by right, nor commit adultery" [Surah al-Furqan: 68] to the end of the verse. Then this was revealed: "Except whoever repents" [Surah Maryam: 60]. I never saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) more joyful at anything than at that, and likewise at this verse: "Indeed, We have granted you a clear victory" [Surah al-Fath: 1].

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: We were sitting in a circle in the mosque discussing the virtues of the prophets (peace be upon them), which of them was the most excellent. We mentioned Nuh (peace be upon him) and his long worship, we mentioned Ibrahim, the Friend of the Most Merciful, we mentioned Musa, the one to whom Allah spoke, we mentioned Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon them both), and we mentioned the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Meanwhile the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us and said: "What are you talking about among yourselves?" We said: O Messenger of Allah, we were discussing the virtues of the prophets (peace be upon them), which of them was the most excellent. We mentioned Nuh (peace be upon him) and his long worship, we mentioned Ibrahim, the Friend of the Most Merciful, we mentioned Musa, the one to whom the Most Merciful spoke, we mentioned Isa bin Maryam (peace be upon them both), and, O Messenger of Allah, we mentioned you as well. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "So whom did you consider the most excellent?" We said: We considered you the most excellent, O Messenger of Allah. Allah sent you to all people, forgave you your past and future sins, and you are the Seal of the Prophets. At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Listen, it is not proper for anyone to say: 'I am better than Yahya bin Zakariyya (peace be upon him).'" We said: O Messenger of Allah, why is that? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Have you not heard how Allah has described him in the Qur'an? He said: 'O Yahya, hold fast to the Scripture with strength, and We gave him wisdom while still a child' [Surah Maryam: 12]." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited until he reached this saying: "A leader, chaste, and a prophet from among the righteous" [Surah Al Imran: 39]. "He never committed a sin, nor did he intend one."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that two angels came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in a dream. One of them sat by his (peace and blessings be upon him) feet and the other by his (peace and blessings be upon him) head. The one by his feet said to the one by his head: Give the parable of this prophet and of his Ummah. He said: "The parable of him and his Ummah is like that of some travellers who reached the edge of a desert. They had neither enough provisions with which to cross the desert, nor enough with which to go back. While they were in that state, a man wearing a fine striped cloak came to them and said: 'Tell me, if I lead you to green meadows and clear pools, will you follow me?' They said: 'Yes.' So he set off with them and brought them to green meadows and clear pools, and they ate, drank and grew fat. Then he said to them: 'Did I not find you in that state?' They said: 'Of course.' 'And did you not agree that if I led you to green meadows and clear pools you would follow me?' They said: 'Yes.' At that one group of them said: 'By Allah, he has spoken the truth; we will certainly follow him,' while another group said: 'We are content with this; we will stay right here.'"
