Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "The example of sins that are regarded as trivial is like that of travellers who stopped in a barren land. They had food with them that could only be prepared with fire, so they dispersed: one brought a piece of dung, another brought a bone, and another brought a stick, until they had gathered enough to prepare their food. Likewise, the one who commits sins regarded as trivial tells one lie and commits one sin, and keeps gathering in this way, until perhaps Allah will throw him on his face into the fire of Hell."

A narrator narrates: After the Fajr prayer we sought permission to visit Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him). He gave us permission and threw a sheet over his wife, and said: "I disliked keeping you waiting at the door."

Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "There are two men at whom Allah laughs: One is a man beneath whom is one of the finest horses of his companions; then they meet the enemy and all of them flee, but he stands firm. If he is killed, he dies a martyr, and Allah laughs at him. The other is a man who gets up at night (for prayer) without anyone knowing of him; he performs ablution thoroughly, sends blessings upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), praises Allah and begins the recitation. Allah laughs at him and says: 'Look at My servant; no one sees him except Me.'"

Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "There are three things upon which I swear, and a fourth which, if I swore upon it, I would still be truthful: Allah will not make the one who has a share in Islam like the one who has no share; the servant who takes Allah as his protecting friend in this world will not be given any protector other than Allah on the Day of Resurrection; and a man who loves a people will come with them. And the fourth, upon which, if I swore, I would still be truthful: Allah does not conceal the faults of a servant in this world except that He will also conceal them in the Hereafter."
Hadith Referenceالمعجم الكبير للطبراني / باب العين / 8767
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "There are three things upon which I swear, and a fourth which, if I swore upon it, I hope I would not be sinful and would still be truthful: Allah will not make the one who has a share in Islam like the one who has no share; the Muslim servant who takes Allah as his protecting friend will not be given any protector other than Allah on the Day of Resurrection; and a man who loves a people, Allah will raise him with them. The shares of Islam are three: prayer, zakah and fasting. And the fourth, upon which, if I swore, I hope I would not be sinful: Allah does not conceal the faults of a servant in this world except that He will also conceal them in the Hereafter."

Zayd bin Wahb narrates: Another man and I went to Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he was standing in prayer, with two men on either side of him. When he concluded with the salam, the two of them asked him about a verse. He asked one of them: "Who taught you to recite it?" He said: "Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)." Then he asked the other: "Who taught you to recite it?" He said: "Abu Hakim" (or he said: "Abu Amrah"). He said: "Recite it as Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) taught you." Then he wept so much that his tears wetted the pebbles, and then he said: "Indeed, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was a strong fortress for Islam; people would enter Islam and not leave it. Then when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, that fortress was breached."
Hadith Referenceالمعجم الكبير للطبراني / باب العين / 8769
Zayd bin Wahb (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Two men disagreed about a verse of the Qur'an, so both of them came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). One said: "Abu Amrah taught me to recite it," and the other said: "Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) taught me to recite it." When Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was mentioned, Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) wept while standing, wiped his eyes and shook his hand off over the pebbles. Then he said: "It is clearer than the road of al-Saylahin." Then he said: "Recite it as Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) taught you. Any household of the Muslims that was not touched by grief on the day Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred is an evil household. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was the most God-fearing of us and the best reciter of the Book of Allah among us."
Hadith Referenceالمعجم الكبير للطبراني / باب العين / 8770
Zayd bin Wahb (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Two men disagreed about a verse. While we were in that state, Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) appeared, coming from the direction of his in-laws. The two of them stood up to go to him, and I stood up with them. They said: "We have disagreed about a verse." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to one of them: "Recite," so he recited. He said: "Who taught you to recite it?" He said: "Abu Amrah Ma'qil bin Muqarrin." Then he said to the other: "Recite," so he recited. He said: "Who taught you to recite it?" He said: "Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)." Then tears flowed from both his eyes, and he wept so much that I saw him take his tears in his palm and cast them on the ground like this, and I saw two marks in the pebbles from the tears of Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him). Then Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I think that any household of the Muslims that was not touched by grief for Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) on the day he was martyred can only be an evil household. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was the most knowledgeable of us about Allah, the best reciter of the Book of Allah among us, and the one with the deepest understanding of the religion of Allah. Recite it as Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) taught you. By Allah, it is clearer than the road of al-Saylahin."

Zayd bin Wahb (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Two men came to Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), while we were with him, and one of them said: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman, how should we recite this verse?" Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) recited it to him. The man said: "But Abu Hakim taught me to recite it in such and such a way." The narrator said: And the other recited it his own way. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Who taught you to recite it?" He said: "Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Recite it as Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) taught you." Then Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) wept so much that I saw his tears dripping onto the pebbles. Then two men who had disagreed about a verse came to him. One of them recited it, and Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You recited well. Who taught you to recite it?" He said: "Abu Hakim al-Muzani taught me." Then he had the other recite and said: "Who taught you to recite it?" He said: "Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) taught me." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) wept until his tears coloured the pebbles. Then he said: "Recite it as Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) taught you." Then he drew a circle with his hand and said: "Indeed, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was a strong fortress for Islam; people would enter it and not leave it. When the righteous are mentioned, then be sure to mention Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He was the dividing line between increase and decrease (in Islam). By Allah, I wish that I could serve someone like him until I die."

Sulayman (al-A'mash) said: I mentioned this (to someone), and he said: "Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said something even greater than that. Waki' said: Al-A'mash said: I found this strange, so I went to Ibrahim and mentioned it to him. He said: "What did you find strange about it? The Muslim threw him down and gripped him with his thumb. Satan said: 'Let me go, and I will teach you a verse which, if any of us hears it, he turns and flees.' So he let him go, but Satan refused to teach him. Then he came back and wrestled with him again, and the Muslim again threw him down and gripped him with his thumb. He said: 'Tell me that verse,' but he again refused to teach him. When he came back the third time, he said: 'It is the verse in Surah al-Baqarah: "Allah, there is no god except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all" [Surah al-Baqarah: 255], to its end.'" The jinn said to him: "Wrestle me again." So he wrestled him again and threw him down again. The human said to him: "I see you are weak and emaciated, as if your two arms were the two legs of a dog. Are all of you jinn like this, or are you alone like this?" He said: "No, by Allah, among them I am counted strong. But wrestle me a third time; if you throw me down, I will teach you something that will benefit you." So he wrestled him again and threw him down. He said: "Come on, teach me." He said: "Do you recite Ayat al-Kursi?" He said: "Yes." He said: "In whatever house you recite it, Satan will leave it, breaking wind loudly like a donkey, and he will not enter it until the morning." Her father asked: 'What did you observe of his strength?' She said: 'He came to the well, on which there was a rock that so many (men together) could not lift, and he lifted it.' Her father asked: 'What did you observe of his trustworthiness?' She said: 'I was walking in front of him, and he put me behind him.' The second is the Egyptian master of Sayyiduna Yusuf (peace be upon him), who said: 'Make his residence honourable; perhaps he will benefit us, or we may adopt him as a son' [Surah Yusuf: 21].
