Abu Wa'il (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Abdullah (bin Mas'ud) (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was given superiority over the people in four matters: his opinion concerning the captives on the day of Badr, for he advised that they be killed, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "Had it not been for a decree from Allah that preceded, a great punishment would have touched you for what you took" [Surah al-Anfal: 68]; his mentioning of the veil, upon which Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "You are jealous over us, though the revelation descends in our houses," and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "And when you ask them (the Prophet's wives) for anything, ask them from behind a screen" [Surah al-Ahzab: 53]; the supplication of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "O Allah, strengthen Islam through Umar bin al-Khattab"; and his opinion regarding Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), for he was the first person to pledge allegiance to him.
