Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: One night we kept talking in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) until our conversation (made us lose track of time and) kept us up late. In the morning we went early to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The prophets were shown to me with the followers from their nations. There was a prophet with whom was a large group of his nation, and there was a prophet with whom there was no one. And Allah has told you about the people of Lut, saying: 'Is there not among you a man of sound judgement?' [Hud: 78]." He said: "Until Musa bin Imran (peace be upon him) passed by, with the group of the Children of Israel who were with him. I said: O my Lord! Where is my Ummah? He said: Look to your right. And I saw that the hills of Makkah were filled with the faces of men. He said: Are you content, O Muhammad? I said: I am content, O my Lord. He said: Look to your left. I looked, and the horizon was filled with the faces of men. He said: Are you content, O Muhammad? I said: I am content, O my Lord. He said: And along with these there are seventy thousand (more) who will enter Paradise without reckoning."
Hearing this, Sayyiduna Ukkashah bin Mihsan al-Asadi (may Allah be pleased with him) came forward and said: O Messenger of Allah! Pray to Allah to make me one of them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed: "O Allah! Make him one of them." Then another man stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah! Pray to Allah to make me one of them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ukkashah has beaten you to it." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "May my father and mother be ransomed for you! If you are able to be among the seventy thousand, then be among them; if you are unable and fall short, then be among the people of the hills; and if you are unable and fall short in that too, then be among the people of the horizon, for I saw some people crowding together in great numbers." Then he said: "I hope that the followers of my Ummah will be a quarter of Paradise." At this the people said takbir (Allahu Akbar). Then he said: "I hope that they will be half of the people of Paradise." At this too the people said takbir. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: 'A large company of the earlier ones, and a few of the later ones' [Al-Waqi'ah: 14].
Then the people began discussing among themselves who these seventy thousand would be. Some said: They are people who were born in Islam and died upon it. Eventually the matter reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are those who do not seek ruqyah, do not take evil omens, and put their trust in their Lord."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: One night we talked a great deal in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); then in the morning we came to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The prophets were shown to me with their nations. A prophet would pass and with him would be a large group; a prophet and with him a band; a prophet and with him a few individuals; and a prophet with whom there was no one. Until Musa (peace be upon him) passed before me, and with him was a great throng of the Children of Israel, and they pleased me greatly. I asked: Who are these? It was said: This is your brother Musa, and with him are the Children of Israel. I asked: Then where is my Ummah? It was said: Look to your right. I looked, and the hills were filled with the faces of men. Then it was said to me: Look to your left. I looked, and the horizon was filled with the faces of men. Then it was said to me: Are you content? I said: I am content, O my Lord; I am content, O my Lord. Then it was said to me: Along with these there are seventy thousand (more) who will enter Paradise without reckoning."
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "May my father and mother be ransomed for you! If you are able to be among the seventy thousand, then do so; if you fall short, then be among the people of the hills; and if you fall short in that too, then be among the people of the horizon, for I saw some people crowding together." At this Sayyiduna Ukkashah bin Mihsan al-Asadi (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah! Pray for me that Allah makes me one of the seventy thousand. He (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for him. Then another man stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah! Pray to Allah to make me one of them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ukkashah has beaten you to it."
The narrator said: Then we began talking among ourselves and said: Who will these seventy thousand be? (It was said:) People who were born in Islam and remained upon it until they died. This reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are those who do not have themselves cauterised, do not seek ruqyah, do not take evil omens, and put their trust in their Lord."

It is narrated about Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was in one of the gardens of Madinah, teaching his two sons to recite (the Qur'an). Meanwhile two birds - two crows or two doves - passed by him, fluttering. Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) looked at them and said: By Allah! If these two (sons) were to die, I would grieve for them only as much as I would grieve for these two birds if they fell down dead. And indeed I feel for them what a father feels for his children; but I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The Hour will not be established until the hypocrites of every tribe become its chiefs." That is why I wish that we die before that time.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection the feet of the son of Adam will not move away from before his Lord until he is asked about five things: about his life, in what he spent it; about his youth, in what he wore it out; about his wealth, from where he earned it and on what he spent it; and what he did with what he knew."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) related that between their (the Muslims') accepting Islam and the revelation of this verse, in which Allah reproaches them, there were only four years: "And let them not be like those who were given the Scripture before, and the time became long for them, so their hearts hardened; and many of them are defiantly disobedient" [Surah Al-Hadid: 16].
Hadith Referenceالمعجم الكبير للطبراني / باب العين / 9738
Sayyiduna Wabisah al-Asadi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I was in my house in Kufah when I heard (a voice) at the door of the house: "Assalamu alaykum (peace be upon you); may I come in?" I said: "Wa alayka al-salam (and upon you be peace); come in." When he entered, it was Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him). I said: "O Abu Abd al-Rahman! What kind of hour for a visit is this?" - and it was around midday - He said: "The day grew long for me, so I thought of someone I could talk with."
The narrator said: Then he began narrating to me hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I narrated to him as well. Then he (himself) began speaking and said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "There will be a fitnah (tribulation) in which the one sleeping will be better than the one lying down, the one lying down better than the one sitting, the one sitting better than the one standing, the one standing better than the one walking, and the one walking better than the one riding, and the one riding in it better than the one galloping (towards the fitnah). All those killed in it will be in the Fire."
The narrator said: I asked: "O Messenger of Allah! When will that be?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That will be in the days of harj (killing and turmoil)." I asked: "When will the days of harj be?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a man cannot trust even the one sitting with him." I asked: "If I live to see that time, what do you command me?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Restrain yourself and your hand, and go into your house." I asked: "O Messenger of Allah! What if someone breaks into my house?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then go into your room." I asked: "What if someone breaks into my room too?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then go into your masjid (place of prayer) and do like this" - and he (peace and blessings be upon him) held his wrist with his right hand - "and say: My Lord is Allah, until you die in that state."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The last person to enter Paradise will be walking on the Bridge (Sirat), at times walking and at times falling on his face, while the Fire scorches him. When he has passed it, he will turn to look at it and say: Blessed is He who saved me from you; He has given me what He has not given anyone of the earlier or the later people. Then a tree will be raised up for him, and he will say: O my Lord! Bring me near to this tree so that I may rest in its shade and drink of its water. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will say: O son of Adam! Perhaps if I give you this, you will ask Me for something else. So He will bring him near to it, while his Lord knows that he will do so, and he will rest in its shade and drink of its water. Then another tree will be raised up for him, more beautiful than the first. He will say: O my Lord! Bring me near to it so that I may rest in its shade and drink of its water, and I will not ask You for anything besides it. And his Lord knows that he will do so, because he will be seeing something he cannot bear to resist. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will say: O son of Adam! Did you not make a covenant with Me that you would not ask for anything besides it? He will say: Yes, O my Lord, but this one - I will not ask You for anything besides it. And his Lord knows that he will do so, and He excuses him, because he will be seeing something he cannot bear to resist. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, will say: Perhaps if I bring you near to it, you will ask Me for something else. He will make a covenant that he will not, so Allah will bring him near to it, and he will rest in its shade and drink of its water. Then a tree will be raised up for him by the gate of Paradise, more beautiful than the first two. He will say: O my Lord! Bring me near to this one, so that I may rest in its shade and drink of its water. Allah, Exalted be His mention, will say: O son of Adam! Did you not make a covenant with Me that you would not ask for anything besides it? He will say: O my Lord! This one - I will not ask You for anything besides it. Allah will say: Perhaps if I bring you near to it, you will ask Me for something else. He will make a covenant that he will not, while his Lord knows that he will do so, and his Lord excuses him, because he will be seeing something he cannot bear to resist. So Allah will bring him near to it, and he will hear the voices of the people of Paradise and say: O my Lord! Admit me into it. Allah will say: O son of Adam! Are you content that I give you the world and another like it along with it? He will say: Are You mocking me, when You are the Lord of the worlds?"
The narrator said: Hearing this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed, then said: "Will you not ask me why I laughed?" The Companions said: "O Messenger of Allah! Why did you laugh?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(I laughed) at the laughter of the Lord of the worlds, the Blessed and Exalted, when he said: Are You mocking me, when You are the Lord of the worlds? Allah will say: No, I am not mocking, but I am able to do whatever I will."
