Sarah, the daughter of Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), narrates that her father told her that he was walking behind the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when one of his Companions, or some of them, pushed him. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By the One in whose hand my soul is, Abdullah will be heavier in the Scales on the Day of Resurrection than Mount Uhud," as though they had been amazed at his (physical) lightness.

Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came to me, having fled from the polytheists, while I was herding the goats of Ibn Abi Mu'ayt at Jiyad. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O boy, do you have milk to give us to drink?" I said: "I am entrusted, and I am not the one to give you drink (that is, these goats are a trust; I cannot give you their milk)." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you have a young goat that no male has yet mounted?" I said: "Yes," and I brought it to him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) passed his hand over the udder, and the udder filled with milk. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) brought a hollowed-out stone, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) milked it, drank himself, and gave me and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to drink. Then he said to the udder: "Shrink," and it shrank.
After that I came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, teach me some of this speech, or of this Qur'an." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You are a boy who is taught." So I took seventy surahs from the mouth of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); no one disputes with me about them.

Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was among the goats of Uqbah bin Abi Mu'ayt when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to me and said: "O boy, do you have any milk?" I said: "Yes, but I am entrusted." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring me a goat that no male has mounted." So I brought a young goat or a kid, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) began passing his hand over the udder and supplicating until milk came down into it. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) brought a stone, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) milked into it, then handed it to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and he drank, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) drank after him. Then he said to the udder: "Shrink, by the permission of Allah," and it shrank and became as it had been before.
Afterwards I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "Teach me some of this Qur'an, or of this speech." He (peace and blessings be upon him) passed his hand over my head and said: "You are a boy who is taught." So I took seventy surahs from his mouth (peace and blessings be upon him), about which no human being disputes with me.

Abu Ubaydah narrates that Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) struck Abu Jahl but could do nothing to him. Abu Jahl said: "The little shepherd of yesterday?" Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "That is me." Then he took his (Abu Jahl's) sword and struck him with it until he killed him.

Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Badr and said: "I have killed Abu Jahl." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, besides whom there is no god, did you really kill him?" I said: "By Allah, besides whom there is no god, it was I who killed him." Joy overcame him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go and show him to me." So I took him (peace and blessings be upon him) until I stood with him at his (Abu Jahl's) head, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Praise be to Allah who has disgraced you. This is the Pharaoh of this Ummah. Drag him to the well." Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I had struck him with my own sword but it made no impression on him, so I took his sword and struck him with it until I killed him. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I reached Abu Jahl while he lay struck down. He had his helmet on and a fine sword with him, while I had a poor (worn-out) sword. I began striking his head with my sword, remembering how he used to strike my head in Makkah, until his hand grew weak and I took his sword. He raised his head and said: Against whom did the turn of fortune (defeat) fall, in our favour or against us? Were you not our little shepherd in Makkah? Then I killed him. Then I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "I have killed Abu Jahl." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, besides whom there is no god?" and he made me swear three times. Then he stood up and went with me to them, and supplicated against them.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When Allah defeated the polytheists on the day of Badr, I passed by and saw Abu Jahl lying struck down, his leg having been struck. I said: O enemy of Allah, O Abu Jahl, Allah has disgraced the wretch. (Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him)) said: And at that moment I had no fear of him. He (Abu Jahl) said: Is there anything more than a man whom his own people have killed? I struck him with a blunt sword of mine, but it had no effect, until his sword fell from his hand. I picked it up and struck him with it until he grew cold (died). Then I came running to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so as to arrive like the fastest runner of Allah's creation, until I reached him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, Allah has killed Abu Jahl." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, besides whom there is no god?" I said: "By Allah, besides whom there is no god, it was I who killed him." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How?" So I told him (peace and blessings be upon him) what had happened and in what state I had found him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) again said: "By Allah, besides whom there is no god?" I said: "By Allah, besides whom there is no god, it was I who killed him." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir (Allahu Akbar), then said: "Praise be to Allah who has fulfilled His promise and helped His servant." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went until he came to him, and said: "This is the Pharaoh of this Ummah."

Abd al-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Mas'ud narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), that he said: On the day of Badr I was sent to Abu Jahl, who had been left sitting (wounded). I took his sword and struck his head with it, and he said: "Our little shepherd of Makkah?" Then I struck him with his own sword until he grew cold (died). Then I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have killed Abu Jahl." At this Aqil, who was a captive with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), said: "You lie; you did not kill him." I said: "Rather, you are the sinful liar, O enemy of Allah! By Allah, it was I who killed him." He said: "What is his mark?" I said: "On his thigh there is a mark like the mark on a camel's knee." He said: "You have spoken the truth."

Zayd bin Wahb (may Allah have mercy on him) said: We were sitting with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) when Sayyiduna Abdullah (bin Mas'ud) (may Allah be pleased with him) came; he was so short that he seemed level with those who were sitting. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) laughed when he saw him. Then he (Ibn Mas'ud), standing over him, began talking with Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and making him laugh. Then he turned away, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) kept watching him until he was out of sight, and then said: "A small vessel filled with understanding of the religion (fiqh)."

Zayd bin Wahb (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: I heard Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) say: "Whoever would like to see who most closely resembles the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in conduct, dignity and manner, from the time he leaves his home until he returns, let him look at Abdullah bin Mas'ud."

Zayd bin Wahb (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates: I was sitting with Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) when Abdullah bin Mas'ud and Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with them both) passed by, and Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I bear witness that the better of you two, and the one who most resembles the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in conduct and bearing, is Abdullah bin Mas'ud."

Zayd bin Wahb (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I was sitting with Sayyiduna Hudhayfah and Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with them both) when one of them said to the other: Have you heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say such-and-such a hadith? He said: No. The other said to him: Then did you hear it yourself? He said: No. He said: The man of this house (Abdullah bin Mas'ud) claims that he heard it. Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If so, he used to enter upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) even when we were kept behind the curtain, and he used to be present even when we were absent." Sulayman al-A'mash says: "By this he meant Abdullah bin Mas'ud."
