It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Recite the Qur'an to me." Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall I recite the Qur'an to you when it was revealed to you?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I love to hear it from someone other than myself." So he recited to him (peace and blessings be upon him) until, when he reached this verse: "So how will it be when We bring from every nation a witness, and bring you as a witness over these?" [Surah al-Nisa': 41], the eyes of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) filled with tears, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever would like to recite the Qur'an just as it was revealed, let him recite it according to the recitation of Ibn Umm Abd."
Imam al-Tabarani (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Amr bin Marzuq and the other students of Shu'bah narrated it like this, while Sulayman bin Harb narrated it with a connected chain.
