Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When Allah defeated the polytheists on the day of Badr, I passed by and saw Abu Jahl lying struck down, his leg having been struck. I said: O enemy of Allah, O Abu Jahl, Allah has disgraced the wretch. (Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him)) said: And at that moment I had no fear of him. He (Abu Jahl) said: Is there anything more than a man whom his own people have killed? I struck him with a blunt sword of mine, but it had no effect, until his sword fell from his hand. I picked it up and struck him with it until he grew cold (died). Then I came running to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so as to arrive like the fastest runner of Allah's creation, until I reached him (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, Allah has killed Abu Jahl." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, besides whom there is no god?" I said: "By Allah, besides whom there is no god, it was I who killed him." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How?" So I told him (peace and blessings be upon him) what had happened and in what state I had found him. He (peace and blessings be upon him) again said: "By Allah, besides whom there is no god?" I said: "By Allah, besides whom there is no god, it was I who killed him." So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said the takbir (Allahu Akbar), then said: "Praise be to Allah who has fulfilled His promise and helped His servant." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went until he came to him, and said: "This is the Pharaoh of this Ummah."
