Bushayr bin Yasar says: I heard Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with him) say: Abdullah bin Sahl was found slain in one of the wells of Khaybar. His brother Abd al-Rahman bin Sahl and his two paternal uncles, Huwayyisah and Muhayyisah, the sons of Mas'ud, came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Abd al-Rahman began to speak, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let the elder speak, let the elder speak." So Muhayyisah spoke and mentioned the killing of Abdullah bin Sahl. He said: O Messenger of Allah! We found Abdullah bin Sahl slain, and the Jews are a people of disbelief and treachery, and it is they who killed him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then you will swear fifty oaths and establish the right to your companion, or to the blood of your companion." They said: O Messenger of Allah! How can we swear about something at which we were neither present nor witnesses? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then the Jews will clear themselves before you by swearing fifty oaths." They said: How can we accept the oaths of a polytheist people? So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) paid the blood money from his own resources. Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "A young she-camel from among them (the camels of the blood money) kicked me."

Abd al-Rahman bin Mas'ud bin Niyar narrates that Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with him) was in a gathering of ours, and he told us that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say to those who estimated the fruit (for zakah): "Take (according to your estimate) and leave a third; and if you cannot leave a third - or he said: do not find - then leave a quarter."

Bushayr bin Yasar narrates from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah and Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Abdullah bin Sahl and Muhayyisah bin Mas'ud came to Khaybar on some errand, then they separated among its date palms, and Abdullah bin Sahl was killed. So his brother Abd al-Rahman bin Sahl and his paternal cousins Muhayyisah and Huwayyisah, the sons of Mas'ud, came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Abd al-Rahman began to speak first, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let the elder speak." That is, the eldest person should begin the talk, and Abd al-Rahman was older than his two companions. Then the two of them spoke about the killing of their companion. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Establish your claim to (the blood of) your slain man, or your companion, by the oaths of fifty of you." They said: They (the Jews) are a disbelieving people. The narrator says: So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) paid his blood money. Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "Then I went near one of those she-camels, and it gave me a kick in their enclosure."

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: A group of the Ansar went out, and a man among them was killed. The matter was brought before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you have witnesses?" They said: We have no witnesses. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then shall I take oaths from them (the Jews)?" They said: In that case the Jews would kill us and then swear oaths as well. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then you yourselves swear the oaths." They said: We were not present at the scene. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) paid his blood money.

It is narrated from Bushayr bin Yasar that a man of the Ansar called Sahl bin Abi Hathmah told him that some people of his tribe went to Khaybar and separated there, and they found one of their number slain. They said to those near whom he had been found: Did you kill our companion? They said: We neither killed him nor do we know (who did). So they went to the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Prophet of Allah, we went to Khaybar and found one of our number slain. The youngest of the group began to speak, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let the elder speak, let the elder speak." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them: "Bring witnesses against the killer." They said: We have no witnesses. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then shall they (the Jews) swear oaths before you?" They said: We do not accept the oaths of the Jews. The Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) disliked that his (the slain man's) blood should go to waste, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) paid his blood money with one hundred camels from the camels of charity (sadaqah).

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the elders of his people that Abdullah bin Sahl and Muhayyisah went out to Khaybar because of hardship that had befallen them. Then Muhayyisah received news that Abdullah bin Sahl had been killed and thrown into a well or a spring. He went to the Jews and said: By Allah, it was you who killed him. They said: By Allah, we did not kill him. Then he returned until he reached his people and told them about it. So he (Muhayyisah) came with his brother Huwayyisah, who was older than him, and Abd al-Rahman bin Sahl as well. Huwayyisah began to speak - he was the one who had been at Khaybar - so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Muhayyisah: "Let the elder speak, let the elder speak." He (peace and blessings be upon him) meant (the elder) in age. So Huwayyisah spoke, then Muhayyisah spoke. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Either they (the Jews) pay the blood money of your companion, or they declare war." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote to them about this, and they wrote back: By Allah, we did not kill him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Huwayyisah, Muhayyisah and Abd al-Rahman bin Sahl: "Will you swear oaths and establish your claim to the blood of your companion?" They said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then shall the Jews swear oaths before you?" They said: They are not Muslims. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) paid his blood money from his own funds, and sent them one hundred she-camels, until they were brought into their house (enclosure). Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "A red she-camel among them kicked me."

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with him) says about the prayer of fear: "The imam stands facing the qiblah, and a group stands on the side of the enemy, with their faces towards the enemy. The imam leads those who are with him in one rak'ah, then remains standing, and they complete one rak'ah on their own, bowing and performing two prostrations in their place. Then these go to the place of the others, and those others come, and the imam leads them in one rak'ah. Thus the imam's two rak'ahs are complete and they have one. Then they bow on their own and perform two prostrations."

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) divided Khaybar into two halves: one half for his own needs and his close ones, and one half among the Muslims. Then he divided it among them into eighteen shares."

Bushayr bin Yasar, the freed slave of Banu Harithah, narrates that Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij and Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with them both) told him that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade muzabanah - and muzabanah is (selling) dates for dates - except for the people of 'araya, for he (peace and blessings be upon him) had given them permission.

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say on the pulpit: "Avoid the seven major sins." The people remained silent and no one asked anything, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Will you not ask me about them? Associating partners with Allah, killing a soul, fleeing from the battlefield, consuming the wealth of an orphan, consuming usury (riba), slandering a chaste woman, and reverting to Bedouin life after the emigration (hijrah)."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr and Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with them) both narrate: Habibah bint Sahl was married to Thabit bin Qays bin Shammas al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), but she disliked him, and he was an unattractive man. So that woman came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, when I see him, were it not for the fear of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, I would spit in his face. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Will you return to him his garden which he gave you as your dowry (mahr)?" I said: Yes. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for him, and she returned his garden to him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) separated the two of them. This was the first khul' that took place in Islam.
