Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates from the elders of his people that Abdullah bin Sahl and Muhayyisah went out to Khaybar because of hardship that had befallen them. Then Muhayyisah received news that Abdullah bin Sahl had been killed and thrown into a well or a spring. He went to the Jews and said: By Allah, it was you who killed him. They said: By Allah, we did not kill him. Then he returned until he reached his people and told them about it. So he (Muhayyisah) came with his brother Huwayyisah, who was older than him, and Abd al-Rahman bin Sahl as well. Huwayyisah began to speak - he was the one who had been at Khaybar - so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Muhayyisah: "Let the elder speak, let the elder speak." He (peace and blessings be upon him) meant (the elder) in age. So Huwayyisah spoke, then Muhayyisah spoke. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Either they (the Jews) pay the blood money of your companion, or they declare war." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote to them about this, and they wrote back: By Allah, we did not kill him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Huwayyisah, Muhayyisah and Abd al-Rahman bin Sahl: "Will you swear oaths and establish your claim to the blood of your companion?" They said: No. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then shall the Jews swear oaths before you?" They said: They are not Muslims. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) paid his blood money from his own funds, and sent them one hundred she-camels, until they were brought into their house (enclosure). Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "A red she-camel among them kicked me."
