Bushayr bin Yasar says: I heard Sayyiduna Sahl bin Abi Hathmah (may Allah be pleased with him) say: Abdullah bin Sahl was found slain in one of the wells of Khaybar. His brother Abd al-Rahman bin Sahl and his two paternal uncles, Huwayyisah and Muhayyisah, the sons of Mas'ud, came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Abd al-Rahman began to speak, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Let the elder speak, let the elder speak." So Muhayyisah spoke and mentioned the killing of Abdullah bin Sahl. He said: O Messenger of Allah! We found Abdullah bin Sahl slain, and the Jews are a people of disbelief and treachery, and it is they who killed him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then you will swear fifty oaths and establish the right to your companion, or to the blood of your companion." They said: O Messenger of Allah! How can we swear about something at which we were neither present nor witnesses? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then the Jews will clear themselves before you by swearing fifty oaths." They said: How can we accept the oaths of a polytheist people? So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) paid the blood money from his own resources. Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "A young she-camel from among them (the camels of the blood money) kicked me."
