Qays bin Bishr al-Taghlibi says: My father was a companion of Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) in Damascus. He told me that there was a man among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called Ibn al-Hanzaliyyah. He was a solitary man who rarely sat with people; he was always occupied in prayer, and when he finished the prayer he would be engaged in tasbih, tahlil and takbir until he reached his family. One day he passed by us while we were with Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him), and he greeted us with salam. Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Tell us something by which Allah will benefit us and which will not harm you. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) dispatched a detachment, and then I (returned). A man came and sat in the gathering in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was present, and he said to a man sitting beside him: If only you had seen us when we met the enemy! So-and-so struck so-and-so with a spear and said: Take that, and I am the Ghifari lad! What do you think? One man said: I think he has nullified his reward. Another said: I see no harm in it. So they disagreed about it, until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) heard them and said: "Subhan Allah! There is no harm in his being rewarded and also praised." The narrator says: Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) was greatly delighted at this and kept saying: Did you hear this yourself from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? The narrator says: He kept saying "Yes", until I began to say that he was going to fall onto his knees.
Then on another day he (Sahl bin al-Hanzaliyyah) passed by us and greeted us with salam, and Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Tell us something that will benefit us and will not harm you. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who spends on horses in the path of Allah is like one who keeps both his hands open in giving charity and does not close them."
The narrator says: Then on another day he passed by us and greeted us with salam, and Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Tell us something that will benefit us and will not harm you. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What an excellent man Khuraym al-Asadi is, were it not for the length of his hair and the trailing of his lower garment." This reached Khuraym, so he took a blade and cut his hair to the level of his ears, and raised his lower garment to the middle of his shins.
The narrator says: Then one day he again passed by us and greeted us with salam, and Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Tell us something that will benefit us and will not harm you. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tomorrow you will be coming to your (religious) brothers, so put your condition in order and put your clothing in order, so that you are like a (distinctive) mole among people. Indeed, Allah does not love obscenity, nor the display of obscenity."

Qays bin Bishr says: My father was one of the companions of Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him). He told me that there was a devout, secluded man from the Ansar there, called Ibn al-Hanzaliyyah, who hardly ever finished with worship. He would pass by Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) and stop with him, and Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) would say: Narrate to us a hadith that will benefit us and will not harm you, and he would narrate a hadith to him. One day he said to him: A detachment set out, and in it a man from Banu Ghifar fought. He struck a man from the polytheists, then said: Take that, and I am the Ghifari! When they returned, they related this statement of the Ghifari. Some of the Muslims said: He has nullified his reward, and others said: Not at all, until this reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no harm in his being rewarded and also praised." The narrator says: Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) was greatly delighted at this.
Ibn al-Hanzaliyyah says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to us one day: "You are going to come to your brothers, so put your mounts and your clothing in order, so that you are like a (distinctive) mole among people. Indeed, Allah does not love obscenity, nor the display of obscenity."
Ibn al-Hanzaliyyah says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who spends on horses in the path of Allah is like one who keeps his hand open in giving charity and does not close it."

It is narrated from Sahl Ibn al-Hanzaliyyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that they set out with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Hunayn, and travelled at a fast pace until evening came and the time of prayer arrived with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then a horseman came and said: O Messenger of Allah! I went ahead of you until I climbed such-and-such a mountain, and I saw Hawazin, all of them to the last man, with their women, their livestock and their sheep, gathered towards Hunayn. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled and said: "That will be the spoils of the Muslims tomorrow, if Allah wills." Then he said: "Who will guard us tonight?" Sayyiduna Anas bin Abi Marthad al-Ghanawi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will, O Messenger of Allah! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Mount." So he mounted a horse of his and came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Head for this mountain pass until you reach its top, and do not let us be taken by surprise from your side tonight." When morning came, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went out to his place of prayer and prayed two rak'ahs, then said: "Have you had any news of your horseman?" A man said: O Messenger of Allah! We have had no news of him. Then the iqamah for the prayer was called, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), even while in the prayer, kept turning to look towards the mountain pass, until, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) had completed the prayer and said the salam, he said: "Rejoice, for your horseman has come." We began looking through the trees into the mountain pass, and indeed he had come, until he stopped before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: I went on until I reached the top of this mountain pass, where you (peace and blessings be upon him) had ordered me; when morning came, I climbed both mountain passes and looked, but I did not see anyone. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Did you dismount during the night?" He said: No, except to pray or to relieve myself. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "You have made (Paradise) obligatory for yourself; there is no harm upon you if you do no (further voluntary) deeds after this."

Rabi'ah bin Yazid says: Abu Kabshah al-Saluli came to Damascus, and Abdullah bin Amir al-Yahsubi asked him: What has brought you here? Perhaps you want to ask something of the Commander of the Believers, Abd al-Malik bin Marwan? He said: No, by Allah! I will not ask anyone for anything after what Sayyiduna Sahl Ibn al-Hanzaliyyah (may Allah be pleased with him) told me. He said: I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when Uyaynah bin Badr al-Fazari and al-Aqra' bin Habis al-Tamimi came, and they asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for something. He (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) and ordered him to do something; I do not know what it was. Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came carrying two letters. He tossed one letter to Uyaynah, who was the more sensible and forbearing of the two men, and he took the letter and tied it in his turban. He tossed the other letter to al-Aqra' bin Habis, who asked: What is in it? Mu'awiyah said: In it is what he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered. He said: What a wretched delegate of my people I would be if I went to them carrying a letter without knowing what is in it, like the letter of al-Mutalammis! The narrator says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was busy talking to a man. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) heard his words, he took the letter and opened it, and saw a camel kneeling. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Where is the owner of this camel?" He was searched for but not found. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fear Allah regarding these animals; eat them while they are well-fed, and ride them while they are healthy." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) went on until he entered his house, and I was with him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) began saying, as though displeased: "Whoever asks people while he is well-off is only accumulating more of the embers of Hell." I said: O Messenger of Allah! What is meant by being well-off? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That you know your family have enough food to give them their morning meal or their evening meal."

Al-Qasim al-Shami relates: Sahl Ibn al-Hanzaliyyah (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by a man who was praying standing far back from the qiblah (from his sutrah), and Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Move forward to your place of prayer, lest Satan cut off your prayer. And I tell you only what I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)."

Al-Qasim, the freed slave of Mu'awiyah, says: I entered the mosque of Damascus and saw some people gathered and an elderly man narrating hadith to them. I asked: Who is this? The people said: This is Sahl Ibn al-Hanzaliyyah (may Allah be pleased with him). Then I heard him say: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever eats meat should perform ablution."

Al-Hasan bin Abi al-Hasan relates that he said to Ibn al-Hanzaliyyah (may Allah be pleased with him): Narrate to us a hadith that you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Goodness is tied to the forelocks of horses until the Day of Resurrection, and their owners are helped in (looking after) them. Whoever keeps a horse in the path of Allah, spending on it is like one who keeps his hand open in giving charity and does not close it."
