Sayyiduna Rabi'ah bin Ka'b al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I used to sleep in the apartment of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and when he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up at night to pray, I would hear him (peace and blessings be upon him) saying for a long while (al-hawi): "Alhamdu lillahi Rabbil-'alamin" (All praise is for Allah, Lord of the worlds), then saying for a long while (al-hawi): "Subhana Rabbiyal-'Azimi wa bihamdih" (Glory and praise be to my Lord, the Magnificent). I asked: What is meant by al-hawi? He said: "Supplicating for a while."

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you have any need?" I said: O Messenger of Allah, your companionship in Paradise. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then help me in your own matter by prostrating much."

Sayyiduna Rabi'ah bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I used to serve the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) during the day, and when night came I would go to the door of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and spend the night near him (peace and blessings be upon him). I would continually hear him (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Subhan Allah, Subhana Rabbi (Glory be to Allah, glory be to my Lord)" until I grew tired or sleep overcame my eyes and I fell asleep. One day he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Rabi'ah, ask of me and I will give you." I said: Give me some time so that I may think it over. Then I remembered that this world is perishing and coming to an end, so I said: O Messenger of Allah, I ask you to supplicate to Allah that He keep me away from Hell and admit me into Paradise. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) fell silent, then said: "Who taught you this?" I said: No one taught me, but I know that this world is coming to an end and perishing, and because of the station you hold with Allah, I wished that you would supplicate to Allah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I will certainly do so, but help me by prostrating much."

Abu Imran al-Jawni (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Rabi'ah al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I used to serve the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) granted me a piece of land, and he also granted Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) a piece of land. Then worldly wealth came, and we disagreed about a cluster of a date palm. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It is within the boundary of my land, and I said: It is within my boundary. There was an exchange of words between me and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said something to me that I disliked. Then he felt remorse and said to me: O Rabi'ah, say the same kind of thing back to me so that it becomes even (retribution). I said: I will not do that. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Either you say it, or I will seek redress against you from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: I will not do it. The narrator said: And Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) left the land. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) set off towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I followed behind him. Then some people from Banu Aslam came and said: May Allah have mercy on Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)! For what will he seek redress against you from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when it was he who said to you what he said? I said: Do you know who this is? This is Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him). He is the second of the two, he is the elder of the Muslims. So beware, lest he turn and see you helping me against him and become angry, then go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) becomes angry because of his anger, and Allah becomes angry because of the anger of them both, and Rabi'ah is destroyed. They said: Then what do you order us to do? I said: Go back. The narrator said: So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) set off towards the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I followed him alone, and I kept walking behind him until he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him (peace and blessings be upon him) the whole matter just as it had happened. He (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head towards me and said: "O Rabi'ah, what is the matter between you and al-Siddiq?" I said: O Messenger of Allah, such and such happened: he said something to me that I disliked, then he said to me: Say the same kind of thing back to me as I said to you, so that it becomes even. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, but do not answer him back; rather say: May Allah forgive you, O Abu Bakr! May Allah forgive you, O Abu Bakr!" The narrator said: So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) turned away, weeping.

Sayyiduna Rabi'ah bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I used to serve the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). One day he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Rabi'ah, will you not marry?" I said: By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, serving you is dearer to me. The narrator said: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated it again, and I said the same thing again. The narrator said: So I said to myself: By Allah, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) knows better than I what is good for me; if he (peace and blessings be upon him) says it again, I will certainly say: Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah! Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Rabi'ah, will you not marry?" I said: Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Go to so-and-so" - he named a man from the Ansar - "they will marry their daughter so-and-so to you." The narrator said: So I went to them and said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has ordered you to marry me (to your daughter). They said: Welcome to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! The messenger of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) does not come except for his need. The narrator said: So they married me, and did not ask me for any proof. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in a sad state, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Rabi'ah, what is the matter with you?" I said: O Messenger of Allah, I went to some noble people; they married me and did not ask for any proof, and I have nothing to give as a dowry (mahr). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Gather for him the weight of a date stone in gold." So they gathered for me the weight of two date stones in gold. I took it to them, and they accepted it and said: It is plenty and good. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in a sad state, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Rabi'ah, what is the matter with you?" I said: O Messenger of Allah, I went to some noble people; they accepted it and said: It is plenty and good, but I have nothing with which to give a wedding feast (walimah). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Gather for him the price of a ram." So they gathered for me the price of a ram, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent to his family, and a basket containing barley was brought. I took it to them, and they said: As for the ram, you take care of it yourselves, and as for the barley, we will take care of it for you. The narrator said: So they did that, and in the morning I invited the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his (peace and blessings be upon him) Companions.

He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your father is so-and-so, to whom you are attributed." A man asked: Will I go to Paradise? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In Paradise." Another man asked: Will I go to Paradise? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In Hell." Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: We are pleased with Allah as Lord.
