Abu Imran al-Jawni (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from Sayyiduna Rabi'ah al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: I used to serve the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) granted me a piece of land, and he also granted Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) a piece of land. Then worldly wealth came, and we disagreed about a cluster of a date palm. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It is within the boundary of my land, and I said: It is within my boundary. There was an exchange of words between me and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said something to me that I disliked. Then he felt remorse and said to me: O Rabi'ah, say the same kind of thing back to me so that it becomes even (retribution). I said: I will not do that. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Either you say it, or I will seek redress against you from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: I will not do it. The narrator said: And Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) left the land. Then Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) set off towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I followed behind him. Then some people from Banu Aslam came and said: May Allah have mercy on Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)! For what will he seek redress against you from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when it was he who said to you what he said? I said: Do you know who this is? This is Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him). He is the second of the two, he is the elder of the Muslims. So beware, lest he turn and see you helping me against him and become angry, then go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) becomes angry because of his anger, and Allah becomes angry because of the anger of them both, and Rabi'ah is destroyed. They said: Then what do you order us to do? I said: Go back. The narrator said: So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) set off towards the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and I followed him alone, and I kept walking behind him until he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him (peace and blessings be upon him) the whole matter just as it had happened. He (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his head towards me and said: "O Rabi'ah, what is the matter between you and al-Siddiq?" I said: O Messenger of Allah, such and such happened: he said something to me that I disliked, then he said to me: Say the same kind of thing back to me as I said to you, so that it becomes even. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, but do not answer him back; rather say: May Allah forgive you, O Abu Bakr! May Allah forgive you, O Abu Bakr!" The narrator said: So Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) turned away, weeping.
