Abdullah bin al-Harith bin Nawfal (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Abd al-Muttalib bin Rabi'ah bin al-Harith bin Abd al-Muttalib told me that his father Sayyiduna Rabi'ah bin al-Harith bin Abd al-Muttalib and Sayyiduna Abbas bin Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to Abd al-Muttalib bin Rabi'ah and al-Fadl bin Abbas: Go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and say: O Messenger of Allah, we have reached the age that you see, and we would like to get married. And you, O Messenger of Allah, are the most generous of people and the one who most upholds the ties of kinship, and our fathers do not have enough to pay the dowry (mahr) on our behalf. So, O Messenger of Allah, appoint us as collectors over the charities, so that we may hand over to you what the other collectors hand over, and receive whatever benefit there is in it. The narrator said: Then Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) came while we were in that state, and he said to us: No, by Allah, he will not appoint any of you as a collector over the charity. Sayyiduna Rabi'ah bin al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: This is from your envy and injustice. You obtained the honour of being the son-in-law of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), yet we did not envy you for it. So Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) spread his cloak on the ground, then lay down on it and said: Today I am Abu al-Hasan. By Allah, I will not leave this place of mine until your two sons return to you with the answer to what you have sent to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Abd al-Muttalib said: So al-Fadl and I set off until we arrived at the time of the Zuhr prayer, when the prayer had already begun, and we prayed with the people. Then al-Fadl and I hurried to the door of the apartment of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); that day he (peace and blessings be upon him) was with Sayyidah Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her). We stood at the door until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came. He (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of my ear and al-Fadl's ear and said: "Come out with it: what are you whispering about?" Then he went inside, and then gave me and al-Fadl permission, so we went in. For a little while each of us left the talking to the other, then I spoke, or al-Fadl spoke (Abdullah was unsure about that), and we spoke to him (peace and blessings be upon him) about what our fathers had told us. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his gaze towards the ceiling of the house, until it seemed so long to us that we thought he (peace and blessings be upon him) would not give us any answer, and until we saw Sayyidah Zaynab (may Allah be pleased with her) signalling with her hand from behind the curtain that we should not be hasty and that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was considering our matter. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) lowered his head and said to us: "This charity is only the dirt of people, and it is not lawful for Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) or for the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Call Nawfal bin al-Harith for me." So Nawfal bin al-Harith was called, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Nawfal, marry Abd al-Muttalib off." The narrator said: So Nawfal married me off. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Call Mahmiyah bin Jaz' for me" (he was a man from Banu Zubayd whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had put in charge of the fifths). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Mahmiyah: "Marry al-Fadl off." So he married him off. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Stand up and pay the dowry on behalf of the two of them from the khumus (one-fifth): such and such an amount." Abdullah bin al-Harith did not hear this (amount).
