Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) heard Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) say: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out at midday and found Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) in the mosque. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What has brought you out (of your house) at this hour?" He said: O Messenger of Allah! The same thing that has brought you out has brought me out (that is, severe hunger). Then Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "O son of al-Khattab! What has brought you out?" He too said the same: O Messenger of Allah! The same need that has brought you both out has brought me out as well. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sat down, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began talking with the two of them. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you have enough strength to walk to this palm grove, so that some food, drink and shade may be arranged?" We said: Yes! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then come with us to the house of Abu al-Haytham bin al-Tayyihan al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him)." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) walked ahead of us. On reaching there, he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave salam three times and sought permission, while Umm al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with her) was behind the door hearing the words, but she remained silent because she wanted the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to give more salam (supplication). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) was about to turn back, Umm al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with her) came out behind them and said: O Messenger of Allah! By Allah, I heard your salam, but I wished that you would grant us more of the blessings of your salam. At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said good words in her favour and asked: "Where is Abu al-Haytham? I do not see him." She said: He is close by; he has gone to fetch sweet water for us. Please come in; he will arrive presently, in sha' Allah. Then she spread a mat for them beneath a tree. Meanwhile Abu al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived, was very pleased to see them, and his eyes were cooled by them. He climbed a date palm and brought down a cluster, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu al-Haytham! This would have been enough for you." He said: O Messenger of Allah! (My wish is that) you eat of every kind of its dates, the fresh, the half-ripe and the ripening. Then he brought water and they all drank. At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is among the blessings about which you will be questioned (on the Day of Resurrection)." Umm al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with her) got up, kneaded dough and baked bread for them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) took their midday rest, and when they awoke the food was ready. The food was placed before them and they all ate their fill and praised Allah Almighty. Then Umm al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with her) also presented the remainder of the cluster, from which they all ate the various kinds of dates. At the end the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave them salam and supplicated for them.
Imam al-Bazzar also recorded it, with this addition: he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Abu al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with him): "When you learn that captives (slaves) have come to us, come to us." Abu al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the news reached me that captives had come to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I came to Madinah, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave me a slave, whom I made a mukatab (made a contract for his freedom) for forty thousand dirhams, and I have never seen anyone more blessed than him.
Abdullah bin Isa said: I narrated this hadith to Isma'il bin Muslim al-Makki, and he also narrated it in the same way, adding that Umm al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with her) said: (O Messenger of Allah!) Would that you supplicated for us! So he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave this supplication: 'Aftara 'indakum al-sa'imun, wa akala ta'amakum al-abrar, wa sallat 'alaykum al-mala'ikah' (May those who fast break their fast with you, may the righteous eat your food, and may the angels pray for mercy and forgiveness for you).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to me: One night I missed my supper. I came home and asked: "Do you have any supper?" My family said: "By Allah! We have no supper." I lay down on my bed, but because of hunger sleep would not come. So I thought that it would be better if I went to the mosque, prayed there and passed the time until morning. So I went out to the mosque and prayed as much as Allah willed, then I sat leaning in a corner of the mosque. Meanwhile Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) appeared and asked: "Who is this?" I said: "Abu Bakr." He asked: "What has brought you out at this hour?" I told him the whole story, and he said: "By Allah! The same thing that brought you out has brought me out too." Then he sat down beside me. While we were in this state, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us and did not recognise us (seeing us there at that time). He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Who are these?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) answered before me, saying: "These are Abu Bakr and Umar." He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What has brought the two of you out at this hour?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I came out and entered the mosque and saw the figure of Abu Bakr. I asked: Who is it? He said: Abu Bakr. I asked: What has brought you out at this hour? He mentioned the whole matter, and I said: By Allah! The same cause that brought you out has brought me out." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah! The same thing that brought the two of you out has brought me out too. Come with us to Abu al-Haytham bin al-Tayyihan al-Waqifi; perhaps we will find something to eat with him." So we set off until we reached his garden on a moonlit night and knocked on the door. His wife asked: "Who is it?" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "This is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Abu Bakr and Umar." She opened the door for us and we entered. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Where is your husband?" She said: "He has gone to fetch sweet water for us from a garden of Banu Harithah; he will come right away." Meanwhile he came carrying a waterskin, hung it from a branch of a date palm, and turned to us, saying: "Welcome, and a blessed arrival! Never have better guests come to anyone than the guests who have come to me." Then he cut a cluster of dates for us and brought it before us, and we began picking out the dates in the moonlight and eating them. Then he took a knife and went towards the goats, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Beware of the milking goat." He took a goat, slaughtered it and skinned it, then said to his wife: "Get up (and prepare the food)." So she ground flour and baked bread, cut the meat into pieces and put it in the pot, and lit a fire beneath it until the meat and bread were ready. Then he made tharid and poured broth and meat over it, then brought it to us and placed it before us, and we ate our fill. Then he went to the waterskin, which the wind had cooled, poured water from it into a vessel and offered it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), who drank it; then he gave it to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and he drank; then he gave it to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he drank. At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Al-hamdu lillah (All praise is for Allah), who brought us out, though nothing but hunger had brought us out (of our homes); then we are returning, and we have received these (blessings). You will surely be asked about them on the Day of Resurrection; these too are among the blessings." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Abu al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with him): "Do you not have a servant who brings you water?" He said: "By Allah! No, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When captives come to us, come to us, so that we may order a servant for you." Only a little time had passed before captives were brought to him (peace and blessings be upon him). Abu al-Haytham (may Allah be pleased with him) came, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What brings you?" He said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! The promise that you made to me." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Here are the captives; get up and choose one of them." He said: "You choose for me." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take this boy and treat him well." He took him to his wife, who asked: "What is this?" He told her the whole story. His wife asked: "What did you say to him (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said: "I said: You choose for me." His wife said: "You did very well. He (peace and blessings be upon him) enjoined you to treat him well, so treat him kindly." The husband asked: "What could be the best treatment of him?" The wife replied: "That you set him free." He said: "Then he is free for the pleasure of Allah Almighty."

It is narrated from Mus'ab bin Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah have mercy on him) that the Mother of the Believers, Sayyidah Hafsah bint Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), said to Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him): "If only you would wear clothes softer and finer than these present clothes of yours, and eat food better and softer than this food of yours!" Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said (in reply to her sympathetic suggestion): "I put you (for this decision) before your own self (so that you yourself may judge fairly). Do you not know such-and-such about the (ascetic and hard) life of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)?" (He kept reminding her of the details of the simple life of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)) until Sayyidah Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) began to weep. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I have explained (my view) to you. The truth is that I want to share with the two of them in their hard and toilsome life (in this world), so that I may also gain their company in that pleasant and delightful life (of the Hereafter)."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Once, on a cold morning, I left my house extremely hungry, and the cold had left me exhausted. I had an old piece of leather, which I tore through the middle, put around my neck and tied tightly over my chest so that I could get some warmth. By Allah! At that time there was nothing in my house to eat, and if there had been anything in the house of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), it would surely have reached me. I set out towards one of the outlying areas of Madinah, and there I peeped through a gap in the wall into the garden of a Jew. He asked: "O Bedouin! What is the matter with you? Would you like one date for every bucket you draw?" I said: "Yes, open the gate of the garden." He opened the gate for me and I went in. I kept drawing buckets from the well and he kept giving me a date for each, until, when my palm was full, I said: "This is enough for me now." Then I ate those dates and drank water by scooping it up. After that I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and sat with him in the mosque, while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting among a group of the Companions. Meanwhile Sayyiduna Mus'ab bin Umayr (may Allah be pleased with him) appeared, wearing a patched cloak. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw him, he (peace and blessings be upon him) remembered the former life of comfort and prosperity in which he used to live (before accepting Islam); then, seeing his present condition, tears flowed from his (peace and blessings be upon him) eyes and he (peace and blessings be upon him) wept. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How will you be at the time when one of you goes out in the morning in one fine suit of clothes and in the evening in another, and curtains are hung over your houses just as they are hung over the Ka'bah?" We said: "O Messenger of Allah! On that day we will be in a far better state than today, for our needs will be met and we will be free for worship alone." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather you are better today than you will be on those days."
Imam Ishaq reported this narration through Wahb bin Jarir.
I (Ibn Hajar) say: Imam al-Tirmidhi narrated it in abridged form through the route of Ibn Ishaq.
Imam Ahmad narrated part of the story of the dates through the route of Mujahid from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).
Ibn Abi Umar narrated from Muhammad bin Ka'b al-Qurazi that once the people of Iraq were struck by famine, so Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stood among them and said: "O people! Rejoice, for by Allah, I hope that only a little time will pass before you see such prosperity and ease as will delight you. I have also seen a period of my life when I remained hungry for three days and had nothing to eat, until I feared that hunger would kill me. I sent Sayyidah Fatimah to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to ask for some food for me, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'O my daughter! By Allah, there is nothing in the house for any living being to eat except this little thing you see before me; but go back, and soon Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, will grant you provision.' When she came back and told me, I went out and reached Banu Qurayzah. There a Jew was at the edge of a well, and he said: 'O Ali! Would you like to water my palm grove in return for food?' I said: 'Yes.' So I made an agreement with him that for every bucket I drew he would give me one date. I kept drawing buckets and he kept giving me dates until both my hands were full of dates. I sat down and ate them, then drank water and said to myself: 'Well done! You have found great good today.' Then in the same way I laboured and obtained dates for the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as well. Then I turned back, and while I was still on the way I found a dinar lying on the ground. I stopped, looked at it and debated within myself whether to pick it up or leave it. Then I did pick it up, thinking that I would consult the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about it. When I came and told her, she said: 'This is provision granted by Allah Almighty; go and buy flour for us.' I went to the market, and there a Jew from Fadak was selling barley flour. I bought flour from him, and when the measuring was complete he asked: 'What is your relation to Abu al-Qasim (peace and blessings be upon him)?' I told him that I am his cousin and his daughter is my wife, so he gave the dinar back to me. I came and told Sayyidah Fatimah, and she said: 'This is provision from Allah, the Mighty and Majestic; take it and bring meat in exchange for eight qirats of gold.' I did so. Then I brought the meat, cut it up and gave it to her. She put the pot on the stove, kneaded the dough and baked bread. When the food was ready we sent an invitation to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) came, and on seeing the food asked: 'What is all this? Did you not just come to me complaining of hunger?' We said: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah! Please sit and we will tell you the whole incident; if you find it lawful and pure, then you eat and we will eat too.' When we told him (peace and blessings be upon him) the whole affair, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'It is pure and lawful; eat in the name of Allah.' Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went outside and saw a Bedouin woman running in great distress as though her heart had been snatched away. She said: 'O Messenger of Allah! My father sent me with a dinar, which has fallen from me, and I do not know where it fell. May my father and mother be sacrificed for you! Please see whether any mention of it has reached you.' The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Call Ali bin Abi Talib.' When I came, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: 'Go to that butcher and tell him that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) says: Your qirats are my responsibility; send back the dinar.' He sent the dinar, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) handed it to that Bedouin woman."

He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me: "O Ibn Umar! What is the matter with you that you are not eating?" I said: O Messenger of Allah! I have no appetite for them. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "But I have an appetite for them, and this is the fourth morning on which I have not tasted a single morsel of food, nor have I found any. Had I wished, I would have supplicated to my Lord and He would have given me wealth like the kingdom of Chosroes and Caesar. O Ibn Umar! How will you be when you remain among people who will store and hide a whole year's provision and whose certainty and reliance upon Allah will become weak?" Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: By Allah! We had not yet moved from our place nor gone anywhere when this verse was revealed: "And how many a creature does not carry its own provision! Allah provides for it and for you, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing." [Surah al-Ankabut: 60] Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has not commanded me to amass the wealth of this world nor to follow desires. So whoever amasses the wealth of the world intending that he will thereby obtain everlasting life, let him know that life is only in the hand of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. Behold! I neither amass any dinar nor any dirham, nor do I hide away any provision for tomorrow."

It is narrated from Sayyidah Salma (may Allah be pleased with her) that Sayyiduna al-Hasan bin Ali, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with them) came to me and said: "Prepare for us the food that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) liked and that he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to eat with relish." She said to Sayyiduna al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him): "O my dear son, these days we no longer have a desire for such (simple) food." Then she took a little barley, ground it, sifted it to clean away its husks, made bread from it, used olive oil as its condiment and sprinkled black pepper over it. Then she placed it before them and said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) loved this food very much and used to eat it with great pleasure and relish."
Imam al-Tirmidhi recorded it in his book "al-Shama'il al-Muhammadiyyah".

It is narrated from Muhammad bin Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) that a nephew of ours (a sister's son) got married and arranged a meal. On that occasion Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him), (mentioning the asceticism and poverty of the noble Companions,) said: "A man from among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would pass several days in such a state that he ate nothing. Then, if he found a piece of (dried) leather, he would make do with it, and if he found nothing at all, he would tie a stone to his stomach (to bear the severity of hunger)."
Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal (may Allah have mercy on him) recorded it in Kitab al-Zuhd.

Hadith Takhrij«
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amir bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent us on a military expedition (sariyyah) towards Nakhlah. With us was Sayyiduna Amr bin Suraqah (may Allah be pleased with him); he was a tall man with a slender waist. (During the journey) he was struck by such severe hunger that (from weakness) his back bent, and, losing the strength to walk, he collapsed upon us. So we took a flat piece of stone, placed it on his stomach and tied it firmly around his back, after which he was able to walk with us. Then we came to an Arab tribe who hosted us (and fed us), and after that he walked with us (with ease) and said: "I used to think that the feet carry the stomach, but the truth has become clear that it is the stomach that carries the feet."
This report is from the Musnad of al-Harith; although there is criticism of Ya'qub bin Muhammad al-Zuhri in its chain, Imam al-Busiri declared the other narrators thiqat (trustworthy) in al-Zawa'id.
