It is narrated from Ziyad bin An'um that, during a naval campaign, they were gathered in one fleet together with Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: When the time for our midday meal came, we sent word to Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) and the people of his ship. So he came to us and said: "You have invited me while I am fasting, but it was a right upon me that I accept your invitation, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'A Muslim has six obligatory rights over another Muslim; whoever abandons a single one of these traits has abandoned an obligatory right of his brother: that he accepts his invitation when he invites him, greets him with salam when he meets him, responds to him (by saying Yarhamuk Allah) when he sneezes, visits him when he falls ill, follows his funeral when he dies, and gives him sincere counsel when he seeks his goodwill and advice.'" These are the words of Musaddad's narration.
This hadith is hasan (good), and it has a supporting report (shahid) in Sahih Muslim from the hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Al-Harith also narrated it similarly, and in it is mentioned: Among us was a cheerful man fond of joking, and a man who was in charge of our expenses and provisions.
In the narration of Ahmad bin Mani', it is reported from Ziyad bin An'um: We took part in a naval campaign in the company of Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), and our ship joined up with a ship in which Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) was present. When our food was ready, we sent for him; he came and then narrated the same hadith. The narrator said: With us was a cheerful man who used to say to the one in charge of our food: O so-and-so, may Allah reward you with good and evil, 'Jazak Allah khayran wa sharran' (may Allah repay you with good and evil). When he said this repeatedly, the one in charge of the food would get angry and begin to abuse him. The joker said: O Abu Ayyub, what do you think: when I say to him, may Allah reward you with good and evil, he curses me? Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Did you say this to him? We used to say: "Whom good does not set right, evil sets right." So the joker said to the man: 'Jazak Allah sharran wa 'arran' (may Allah repay you with evil and hardship). At that, the cook laughed, was pleased, and said: You will not give up your joking in any situation. Upon this the joker said: May Allah Almighty reward Abu Ayyub with good; he has told me (the successful formula).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah bin Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) that: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (with utmost humility and modesty) used to go personally to the poor and weak among the Muslims, visit their sick, and attend their funerals." Imam Ishaq (may Allah have mercy on him) says that through the chain of Sufyan bin Husayn, from Imam al-Zuhri, then from Abu Umamah, and then from his father (Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf, may Allah be pleased with him), a similar report is also narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
I (Ibn Hajar) say: Imam Abu Ya'la and Imam al-Tabarani have mentioned this route of Sufyan bin Husayn as connected (mawsul) with their chains; although some weakness is found in Sufyan bin Husayn's memory when narrating from Imam al-Zuhri, the earlier narration of al-Walid bin Muslim from Imam al-Awza'i strengthens it, by which its chain becomes strong.

Imam Ishaq bin Rahwayh narrated this hadith in his Musnad; the narrator Isma'il bin Muslim al-Makki in its chain is da'if (weak), but the meaning of this hadith is established by other sahih hadith and supporting reports.

It is narrated from Imam Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: "Indeed, a believer is a part of another believer; his need lies with him; he should bear hardship and trouble for the sake of his brother; he is delighted at his joy and grieved at his sorrow; and he is the mirror of his brother: if he sees in him something he dislikes, he corrects him, straightens him and guides him in the right direction, and he speaks with him and holds him to account in matters of truth, in private and in public, in every situation."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a Bedouin came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and sat before him (peace and blessings be upon him) in the ihtiba' posture (drawing his knees up to his stomach with both hands). Then he said: O Messenger of Allah, teach me (the religion), for I am a rough and harsh-natured Bedouin. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Have taqwa of Allah, and never regard any good deed as insignificant, even if it is pouring (water and the like) from your vessel into the vessel of your companion, and even that you meet your brother with your face open to him with cheerfulness and a smile." (the complete hadith).
And Imam Abu Ya'la reported this addition in his narration, that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And if a person abuses you and shames you with a fault of yours that he knows about, then never shame him with a (fault) that you know about him, for the evil consequence of that act will fall upon him (the one who abused), and its good outcome (and reward) will be yours."
