It is narrated from Ziyad bin An'um that, during a naval campaign, they were gathered in one fleet together with Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: When the time for our midday meal came, we sent word to Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) and the people of his ship. So he came to us and said: "You have invited me while I am fasting, but it was a right upon me that I accept your invitation, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'A Muslim has six obligatory rights over another Muslim; whoever abandons a single one of these traits has abandoned an obligatory right of his brother: that he accepts his invitation when he invites him, greets him with salam when he meets him, responds to him (by saying Yarhamuk Allah) when he sneezes, visits him when he falls ill, follows his funeral when he dies, and gives him sincere counsel when he seeks his goodwill and advice.'" These are the words of Musaddad's narration.
This hadith is hasan (good), and it has a supporting report (shahid) in Sahih Muslim from the hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Al-Harith also narrated it similarly, and in it is mentioned: Among us was a cheerful man fond of joking, and a man who was in charge of our expenses and provisions.
In the narration of Ahmad bin Mani', it is reported from Ziyad bin An'um: We took part in a naval campaign in the company of Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), and our ship joined up with a ship in which Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) was present. When our food was ready, we sent for him; he came and then narrated the same hadith. The narrator said: With us was a cheerful man who used to say to the one in charge of our food: O so-and-so, may Allah reward you with good and evil, 'Jazak Allah khayran wa sharran' (may Allah repay you with good and evil). When he said this repeatedly, the one in charge of the food would get angry and begin to abuse him. The joker said: O Abu Ayyub, what do you think: when I say to him, may Allah reward you with good and evil, he curses me? Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Did you say this to him? We used to say: "Whom good does not set right, evil sets right." So the joker said to the man: 'Jazak Allah sharran wa 'arran' (may Allah repay you with evil and hardship). At that, the cook laughed, was pleased, and said: You will not give up your joking in any situation. Upon this the joker said: May Allah Almighty reward Abu Ayyub with good; he has told me (the successful formula).
