Ishaq bin Suwayd said: I heard Abu Habibah narrating about the man who came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him a question. That man said: I asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) while I was wearing perfume mixed with saffron (in the state of ihram), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Go and take a bath (ghusl)." So I went and bathed, then came back. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said the same thing three times. The man said: Then I went and went down into a well, took a nashfah, meaning a stone, and began rubbing with it to purify myself; then I bathed and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Now state your need."
I (Ibn Hajar) say: Imam Abu Dawud has narrated a hadith of similar meaning from Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There are three people whom the angels do not come near: the man who has applied khaluq (a particular yellow-coloured perfume) like women, the one in a drunken stupor, and the one in a state of major ritual impurity (janabah) (for whom a ritual bath is obligatory)."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "I went with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to the Jews of Banu Qaynuqa', and he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man who had applied a yellow-coloured perfume (khaluq), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) withheld his hand (instead of shaking hands with him, or to forbid him). I said: O Messenger of Allah, perhaps he is a bridegroom. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Even if he is a bridegroom (it is still not permissible). Go and wash it (off) and then rub it thoroughly, then wash it (off) and then rub it thoroughly.
Then wash it and then rub it thoroughly.'"

It is narrated from the father of Mudrik bin Umarah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of the Conquest of Makkah to give him the pledge of allegiance, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw that his hand had khaluq (saffron or some perfume) on it, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) held back his hand from placing it on his (for the pledge). A man said to him: "May your mother be bereaved of you! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) held back his hand from you only because there is khaluq on your hand." Hearing this, he washed his hand, then came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again and gave him (peace and blessings be upon him) the pledge of allegiance.
Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated this hadith from Ibn Numayr, from Hurayth, from Mudrik bin Umarah, from his father. And al-Harith said: Zakariyya bin Adi narrated this hadith to us, from Ibn Numayr, with the same (above-mentioned) chain.
