It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Tha'labah al-Khushani (may Allah be pleased with him): I said: "O Messenger of Allah! I vowed to slaughter some camels at the site of one of the idols of the Days of Ignorance?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fulfil your vow, and do not become sinful before your Lord." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said (stating the legal principle in this regard): "There is no fulfilment of a vow (that is, it is not lawful to carry it out) in disobedience and defiance of Allah Almighty, in severing ties of kinship, or in what a person does not himself own."

A man of the desert narrates from his father, and he from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him), that he performed Hajj together with a close relative of his while they had tied themselves to one another (with a rope) (because of a vow). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw them in this state, he asked: "What is this?" They said: "(O Messenger of Allah!) It is a vow." It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) that Allah Almighty granted the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) some camels as spoils. He (peace and blessings be upon him) inspected them for distribution, and Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! Give me some of them too." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No." He insisted three times, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, I will not do it," until at last four camels remained that were very sturdy and had high humps, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Musa! Take them." He said: "O Messenger of Allah! I asked you for a gift and you refused me and also swore an oath, so I feared that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) might have made some lapse (forgetfulness) regarding his oath, in that he has given me these camels."
At this he (peace and blessings be upon him), explaining the prophetic principle, said: "When I swear an oath about something and then see that there is more good in another course, I pay the expiation for my oath and adopt the course that is better and more excellent."

He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have no mount to give you, and by Allah, I will not provide you with mounts."
The narrator relates: We had to wait a few days; then camels of charity were brought to him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for me and ordered that we be given three excellent camels with white humps. When we set off with those camels, I said to my companions: "By Allah, I do not think there will be blessing for us in these camels, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) swore not to give us mounts; perhaps he (peace and blessings be upon him) has forgotten. So we should go back in order to remind him (peace and blessings be upon him) of his oath."
So we came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) again and said: "O Messenger of Allah! What of the oath you swore not to give us mounts?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I remember my oath well; (the truth is that) whoever among you swears an oath about something and then sees more good in another course, let him do what is better and pay the expiation for his oath."
