It is reported about Sayyiduna Abu Malik al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that he gathered his people. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: He then narrated the full report, in which, further on, he states: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had completed the prayer, he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face towards us and said: "O people, listen and understand! And know that Allah Almighty has certain servants who will be neither prophets nor martyrs, yet the prophets and martyrs will envy them for their rank and their nearness in the court of Allah Almighty." A Bedouin man who was sitting far away rose onto his knees, pointed with his hand towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and submitted: O Messenger of Allah, there will be people who will be neither prophets nor martyrs, yet the prophets and martyrs will envy them for their place of sitting and their nearness in the court of Allah Almighty? Describe their appearance to us, describe their qualities to us, describe their form to us. The narrator says: The face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) lit up with joy at the Bedouin's question, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They will be people from different regions and different tribes, with no ties of kinship between them. They will love one another for the sake of Allah Almighty and keep ties with one another. On the Day of Resurrection, Allah Almighty will have pulpits of light set up for them and will seat them upon them. He will make their faces light and their clothes light. On the Day of Resurrection, (other) people will be in terror, but these people will not be in terror. They are those friends (awliya') of Allah upon whom there will be no fear, nor will they grieve."

In one narration the wording is: (The narrator says:) I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when this verse was revealed to him: "O you who believe, do not ask about things which, if they were made plain to you, would displease you." The narrator says: We began asking the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), whereupon he said: Allah Almighty will have certain servants who will be neither prophets nor martyrs, yet the prophets and martyrs will envy them for their place of sitting and their nearness in the court of Allah Almighty. The narrator says: He then mentioned the long hadith. All of these narrations were recorded by Imam Ahmad, and Imam al-Tabarani recorded something similar, adding these words: "They will be before the Most Merciful on pulpits of light made of pearls." Shahr bin Hawshab says: Among us, that is, among the people of the Ash'ar tribe, there was a man who had kept the company of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and had taken part in the campaigns alongside the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in an excellent manner. His name was Sayyiduna Malik (may Allah be pleased with him), or perhaps Sayyiduna Ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him); this doubt is from the narrator named Awf. One day he came to us and said: "I have come to you to teach you, and to show you the prayer by leading you in it, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to lead us in prayer." Then he called for a large vessel and had water poured into it; then he called for a small vessel and began pouring water over us with the small vessel, and then he said: Now perform ablution (wudu) thoroughly. Then he stood and led us in a complete yet brief prayer. When he had finished the prayer, he said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to us: "I know of certain people who are neither prophets nor martyrs, yet the prophets and martyrs will envy them for their rank in the court of Allah Almighty." One of those present, who was a Bedouin, spoke. The narrator says: We used to like it, when we were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that there was a Bedouin among us, because the Bedouins dared to ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) questions, while we did not dare. That Bedouin said: O Messenger of Allah, describe their qualities to us. The narrator says: We saw the blessed face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) begin to shine, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They will be people from different tribes who love one another for the sake of Allah Almighty. Their faces will be light, and they will be upon light. When (other) people are afraid, they will not be afraid, and when (other) people grieve, they will not grieve."
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except Shahr bin Hawshab, and more than one scholar has declared him thiqah (trustworthy).

He will seat them on pulpits made of light. The faces of these people will be light. They will not be prophets, martyrs or the truthful (siddiqin)." Abu Muslim al-Khawlani says: I entered the mosque of Hims, and there was a circle in it in which thirty-two Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) were present. Among them was a young man with kohl-dark eyes and gleaming teeth, sitting in the ihtiba' posture. Whenever a disagreement arose among them about any matter, they would ask him and that young man would inform them, and all of them would defer to his opinion. I asked: Who is this man? The people said: This is Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal. I went to perform the prayer, intending to meet one of them, but I could not meet any of them; they had all gone away. The next day I came to the mosque, and Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) was praying by a pillar. I prayed near him. When he had finished the prayer, I sat down, with the pillar between me and him. Then I sat in the ihtiba' posture, and a little while passed during which I did not speak to him, nor did he speak to me. Then I said: By Allah, I love you, and it is not for any worldly purpose that I hope to obtain from you, nor is there any kinship between me and you. He asked: Then for what reason (is this love)? I said: For the sake of Allah Almighty. He undid my ihtiba' and then said: If you are speaking the truth, then accept this glad tiding: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Those who love one another for the sake of Allah Almighty will be in the shade of Allah Almighty on the day when there will be no shade but His shade, and the prophets and martyrs will envy them for their station." I narrated to him the hadith that Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) had narrated to me, and Sayyiduna Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: May Allah Almighty have mercy on Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him). These people will be on pulpits made of light, and the prophets and the truthful (siddiqin) will envy them for their station."
