Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Beware of sins that are considered trivial, for they gather against a person until they destroy him." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set forth a parable for the people: "It is like a group of people who camp in a wilderness. The time comes to prepare food; one man goes and brings a stick, another man goes and brings another stick, until they gather a great deal of wood, kindle a fire and cook something on it."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded it. The narrators of both are the narrators of the Sahih, except Imran bin Dawud al-Qattan, and he has been declared trustworthy.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Satan has despaired of idols being worshipped in the land of the Arabs, but he will be content with something less than that from you, namely trivial sins, and those sins will be destructive on the Day of Resurrection. Avoid wrongdoing as much as you can, for on the Day of Resurrection a servant will come with good deeds and think that these good deeds will save him. But then one servant after another will stand and say: 'O my Lord, Your servant wronged me.' The Lord will say: 'Erase some of his good deeds.' This will keep happening until not a single good deed of that person remains. Its example is like a group of people who, while travelling, camp in a wilderness and have no firewood with them. They scatter here and there to gather firewood, until they collect the wood, kindle a great fire and cook whatever they intended. Such is the example of sins too."
Abu Ya'la recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Ibrahim bin Muslim al-Hajari, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "The example of trivial sins is like that of travellers who camp in a wilderness. They have grain with them for food, but that grain can only be prepared by fire. So they scatter here and there; one person brings dung, another brings a bone, another brings a stick, until they gather enough things to light a fire and prepare their food. Such is the example of the one who commits trivial sins: sometimes he tells a lie, sometimes he commits some other sin, and when all of these gather, they may cause him to be thrown on his face into the fire of Hell."
Al-Tabarani recorded it as a mawquf narration (stopping at the Companion) with two chains, and the narrators of one of them are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Beware of trivial sins, for the example of trivial sins is like that of people who camp in a valley. One person brings a stick, another person brings another stick, until there is enough wood for them to bake their bread. Such is the example of trivial sins too (when they accumulate greatly): when the one who commits them is taken to account for them, they will destroy him."
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih. Al-Tabarani recorded it in all three of his books through two routes; the narrators of one of them are the narrators of the Sahih, except Abd al-Wahhab bin Abd al-Hakam, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Junadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had finished with the Battle of Hunayn, we camped at a barren place where nothing was to be found. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Gather! Whoever finds anything, let him bring it; whoever finds a bone or anything else, let him bring it. The narrator says: In a short while a heap was gathered. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you see this? In the same way sins gather against any one of you, just as you have gathered this. So a man should keep fearing Allah Almighty and should not commit any sin, small or great, for they will be counted against him.
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Nufay' Abu Dawud, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Ubadah bin Qurt (may Allah be pleased with him) (the narrator is unsure; perhaps the word is: Qurz) says: "Nowadays you do deeds that are finer (that is, lighter) than a hair in your eyes, yet in the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) we used to count them among the destructive deeds." Humayd says: I asked Abu Qatadah: If he had lived to see our time, what would he have said then? Abu Qatadah said: Then this statement would have been even more fitting.
Ahmad recorded it and gave the name as 'Ubadah', while al-Tabarani gave it as 'Abbad', and Allah knows best. Some of the narrators of the chains of Ahmad and al-Tabarani are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "A woman was punished because of a cat (here the narrator is unsure of the word used for the cat). The woman tied it up until it died; she did not let it go so that the cat could eat something from the earth by itself. Because of this deed, Hell became binding upon that woman."
Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah, who is hasan al-hadith (fair in narration), though there is weakness in him; the remaining narrators of this narration are the narrators of the Sahih.

Alqamah narrates: We were with Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) when Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) also came. Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Are you the one who narrates the hadith that a woman was punished because of a cat, that she had tied the cat up and did not give it anything to eat or drink? Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: I heard it from him (that is, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)). Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Do you know what that woman was? Along with what she did, that woman was also a disbeliever, and a believer is more honoured in the sight of Allah Almighty than that Allah Almighty would punish him because of a cat. When you narrate a hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then examine what you are narrating.
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
