Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 17460

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Satan has despaired of idols being worshipped in the land of the Arabs, but he will be content with something less than that from you, namely trivial sins, and those sins will be destructive on the Day of Resurrection. Avoid wrongdoing as much as you can, for on the Day of Resurrection a servant will come with good deeds and think that these good deeds will save him. But then one servant after another will stand and say: 'O my Lord, Your servant wronged me.' The Lord will say: 'Erase some of his good deeds.' This will keep happening until not a single good deed of that person remains. Its example is like a group of people who, while travelling, camp in a wilderness and have no firewood with them. They scatter here and there to gather firewood, until they collect the wood, kindle a great fire and cook whatever they intended. Such is the example of sins too."
Abu Ya'la recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Ibrahim bin Muslim al-Hajari, who is da'if (weak).
