Reports on those who believe in the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) without having seen him

Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) states: I was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "Tell me about those who are the most excellent of the people of faith in terms of faith." The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! The angels." the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are indeed so, and it is their right to be so; what could prevent them from that when Allah Almighty has granted them a special station? But it is someone other than them." The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! Then the Prophets, whom Allah Almighty has honoured with His Messengership and Prophethood." the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are indeed so, and they are deserving of it; what could prevent them from that when Allah Almighty has granted them a special rank and station?" The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! Then the martyrs who attained martyrdom alongside the Prophets." the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are indeed so, and they are deserving of it; what could prevent them when Allah Almighty has honoured them with martyrdom? But it is other people than them." The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! Who are they?" the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "People who are still in the loins of men and will come after me; they will believe in me although they have not seen me, and they will affirm me although they have not seen me. They will find a hanging page and act upon the rulings in it. These people will be the most excellent of the people of faith in terms of faith."
Abu Ya'la recorded it.

Al-Bazzar recorded it; he says: It is reported from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell me, which creation will be the greatest in rank and standing in the presence of Allah Almighty on the Day of Resurrection?" The people said: "The angels." the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What prevents them, when they are near to their Lord? But it is someone other than them." The people said: "The Prophets." the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What prevents them, when revelation comes down upon them? But it is others than them." The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! Then tell us." the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "People who will come after you; they will believe in me although they have not seen me. They will find a hanging page and believe in it. On the Day of Resurrection they will be the greatest in the presence of Allah Almighty in rank and standing (the narrator is unsure, or perhaps the words are:) in faith."
He said: The correct view is that this report is mursal, from Zayd bin Aslam. One of the two chains of al-Bazzar for the marfu' report is hasan (good); its chain contains a narrator, al-Minhal bin Bahr, whom Abu Hatim declared thiqah (trustworthy), and there is a difference of opinion about him; the rest of its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) states that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Which creation is the most wondrous in faith?" The people said: "The angels." the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How could the angels not believe?" The people said: "The Prophets." the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Revelation comes to the Prophets; how could they not believe?" The people said: "The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them)." the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Companions are with the Prophets; how could they not believe? The most wondrous of people in faith will be those who come after you; they will find a book of revelation, believe in it and follow it. They will be the most wondrous of people (the narrator is unsure, or perhaps the words are:) of creation in faith."
Al-Bazzar recorded it; he says: As a hadith reported from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him),
this report is gharib (rare). (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Its chain contains a narrator, Sa'id bin Bashir, about whom there is a difference of opinion; some declared him thiqah (trustworthy) and others declared him da'if (weak). The rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Salih bin Jubayr states: Sayyiduna Abu Jumu'ah al-Ansari, a Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), came to us at Bayt al-Maqdis to pray there, and Raja' bin Haywah was with us at that time. When he was about to leave, we walked with him to see him off. When we intended to return, he said: "You have a gift and a right due from me: that I narrate to you a hadith which I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." We said: "May Allah Almighty have mercy on you! Please narrate it." He said: "We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and there were ten of us, including Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him). We said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Is there any people who will receive a greater reward than us, when we have believed in you and followed you?' the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'What would prevent you from that, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is among you and revelation comes to you from the heavens? Rather, there will be a people who come after you; a book between two covers will come to them, they will believe in it and act upon the rulings in it. They will receive a greater reward than you, they will receive a greater reward than you, they will receive a greater reward than you.'"
Al-Tabarani recorded it. There is a difference of opinion about its narrators.

Sayyiduna Abu Jumu'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) states: We had the morning meal with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyiduna Abu Ubaydah bin al-Jarrah (may Allah be pleased with him) was with us. He said: "O Messenger of Allah! Will anyone be better than us, when we accepted Islam with you and took part in jihad with you?" the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes! A people who will come after me; they will believe in me although they have not seen me."
Ahmad, Abu Ya'la and al-Tabarani recorded it with various chains, and the narrators of one of Ahmad's chains are thiqat (trustworthy).

A man from Banu Asad states that Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) told him that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Those of my Ummah with the most intense love for me are people who will be after me (the narrator is unsure, or perhaps the words are:) who will come after me. One of them would wish that he could give away his family and his wealth and in exchange have seen me."
Ahmad recorded it; he did not name the Tabi'i, and the rest of the narrators of one of its two routes are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A people will come after me; one of them would wish that he could give his family and wealth as a ransom for seeing me." (That is, if only it were within his power to pay this ransom and attain the honour of seeing me.)
Al-Bazzar recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Rahman bin Abi al-Zinad; his hadith is hasan (good), though there is weakness in him; the rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "By Allah! You love the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) more than those who saw him (peace and blessings be upon him) (the narrator is unsure, or perhaps the words are:) more than most of those who saw him (peace and blessings be upon him) (you love the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) more)."
Al-Bazzar and al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Dawud al-Harrani, the brother of Abd al-Ghaffar, and I do not know him; the hadith of the rest of the narrators in al-Bazzar's chain is hasan (good).

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
"I wished that I could meet my brothers. The Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Are we not your brothers?' the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'You are my Companions; my brothers are those who will believe in me although they have not seen me.'"
Ahmad recorded it, and Abu Ya'la recorded it with these words:
"When will I meet my brothers? The people said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Are we not your brothers?' the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
'Rather, you are my Companions; my brothers are those who will believe in me although they have not seen me.'"
Among the narrators of Abu Ya'la is Muhtasib Abu A'idh, whom Ibn Hibban declared thiqah (trustworthy) and Ibn Adi declared da'if (weak). The rest of Abu Ya'la's narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except al-Fadl bin al-Sabbah, and he is thiqah (trustworthy). Ahmad's chain contains a narrator, Jisr, and he is da'if (weak).
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih except Muhtasib.

With the chain of Abu Ya'la it is reported that Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) states that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Glad tidings (tuba) to the one who saw me and believed in me, and glad tidings seven times to the one who believed in me without having seen me."
Ahmad recorded it. Abu Ya'la's chain is hasan (good), as has preceded, and Ahmad's chain contains a narrator, Jisr, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) reports concerning the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "A man said to him: 'O Messenger of Allah! Glad tidings (tuba) to the one who saw you and believed in you.' the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Glad tidings to the one who saw me and believed in me, and glad tidings, and more glad tidings, and more glad tidings to the one who believed in me without having seen me.' That man said to him: 'What is meant by Tuba?' the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'A tree in Paradise whose extent is a journey of 100 years, and the garments of the people of Paradise come out of its branches.'"
Ahmad and Abu Ya'la recorded it.

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Glad tidings (tuba) to the one who saw me and who believed in me, and glad tidings seven times to the one who believed in me and did not see me."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it with various chains. Its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih except Ayman bin Malik al-Ash'ari, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) states: Once we were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when two riders appeared. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw them, he said: "These two are Kindi and Madhhiji." Then they came to him, and they were from the Madhhij tribe. The narrator states: One of them came near to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in order to pledge allegiance to him. When he took hold of the hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "O Messenger of Allah! What is your view: whoever sees you, believes in you, affirms you and follows you, what will he receive?" the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Glad tidings (tuba) to him." He passed his hand over the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and went away. Then the other man came forward and took hold of his hand to pledge allegiance to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and said: "O Messenger of Allah! What is your view: whoever believes in you, affirms you and follows you, but has not seen you?" the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Glad tidings to him, more glad tidings to him, more glad tidings to him." The narrator says: Then he passed his hand over the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and went away.
Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih except Muhammad bin Ishaq, and he has explicitly stated that he heard it.

Sayyiduna Abu Amrah (may Allah be pleased with him) states that he said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "What is your view about the one who believes in you without having seen you, and affirms you without having seen you?" the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Glad tidings (tuba) to them, and more glad tidings to them; they are from us, and they will be with us."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and something similar in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Its chain contains a narrator, Bayhas al-Thaqafi, whom I do not know, and a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah, in whom there is weakness; the rest of the narrators of al-Kabir are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) states that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Glad tidings (tuba) to the one who lives in my time, believes in me and affirms me; and glad tidings also to the one who does not live in my time, yet believes in me and affirms me; and more glad tidings to the one who does not live in my time, yet believes in me and affirms me."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Muhammad bin al-Qasim al-Asadi, and there is agreement on his weakness.
