Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: Whoever of Allah's creation greets you with salam, return his greeting, even if he is a Magian, for Allah Almighty has said: "When you are greeted with a greeting, respond with one better than it or (one like it)."
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Ishaq bin Abi Isra'il, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).

Tamim bin Salamah narrates: Some people from among the polytheists were walking along with Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him). When he reached the gate of the palace, he greeted them with salam.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except that the narrator Tamim bin Salamah did not live in the time of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyiduna Abu Basrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In the morning we will go to the Jews, so do not initiate the salam with them. If they greet you with salam, say to them in reply: 'Wa alaykum (And upon you).'"
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it, and he added these words: "When we came to them and they greeted us with salam, we said: 'Wa alaykum.'" One of the two chains of Imam Ahmad, and that of Imam al-Tabarani, have narrators who are the narrators of the Sahih.

This narration is mentioned in the Sahih, but it does not contain the mention that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission to kill him.

Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in a gathering. A Jew passed by and greeted them with salam, and the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned his greeting. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you know what he said?" The people said: "Yes, he greeted us with salam." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He said, 'As-samu alaykum,' meaning: may you grow weary of your religion. Bring him back to me." (Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him:) "What did you say?" He said: "(I said:) As-samu alaykum." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the People of the Book greet you with salam, say: 'Alaykum (Upon you),' meaning: may what you have said come upon you." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: there is a hadith of Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned in the Sahih, which is other than this hadith.
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wa alayka (meaning: may it come upon you too)."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Abd al-Nur bin Abdullah, who is kadhdhab (a liar).
