Abu al-Bakhtari narrates: Al-Ash'ath bin Qays and Jarir bin Abdullah al-Bajali came to Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him). The two of them came to Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) in a fortress in the outskirts of al-Mada'in. They greeted him with salam, and then they asked: "Are you Salman al-Farisi?" He replied: "Yes." They asked: "Are you a companion of the Messenger of Allah?" Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: "I do not know." The two of them became doubtful about this and thought that perhaps he was not the person they wanted to meet. Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) said to them: "I am the very person you want to meet. I have seen the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and I have sat with him, but the companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will be the one who enters Paradise with him. What do you two need?" They replied: "We have come to you from your brother who is in Syria." Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Who is he?" They replied: "Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him)." Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Where is his gift that he sent with you two?" They replied: "He did not send any gift with us." Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Fear Allah and fulfil the trust. Whoever comes to me from him brings a gift from him." They said: "Let this not be raised against us. We have wealth of our own; decide whatever you wish concerning it." Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I do not want your wealth; I want the gift that he must have sent with you two." They said: "By Allah, he did not send anything with us, except that he said to us: 'Among you there is a man such that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was alone with him, he did not seek anyone else's company while he was present. So when you two go to him, convey my salam to him.'" Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "This is the very gift I wanted to receive from you. What gift could be better than salam, which is a greeting from Allah Almighty, blessed and pure?"
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Yahya bin Ibrahim al-Mas'udi, and he is thiqah (trustworthy).
