Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man from the People of the Book came and greeted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), saying: "As-samu alaykum (Death be upon you)." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah, shall I not strike off his neck?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No."
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say:
This narration is mentioned in the Sahih, but it does not contain the mention that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) sought permission to kill him.
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
