The revelation of the prescribed punishments and what was before that

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says concerning this statement of Allah Almighty (Allah, the Exalted, says): "Those of your women who commit indecency." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: Previously such women would be confined to their houses; if one died, she died, and if she lived, she lived, until this verse, which is in Surah al-Nur, was revealed: "The woman and the man guilty of fornication, flog each of them with a hundred lashes." Then the ruling concerning the hadd punishments was revealed, so whoever committed any such act would be flogged and released.
Al-Tabarani recorded it from his teacher Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Sa'id bin Abi Maryam, who is da'if (weak). The hadith narrated by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) will come later under Surah al-Nur.

Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) says: This verse was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Those of your women who commit indecency" to the end of the verse. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dealt with those women accordingly. Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was seated and we were around him. When revelation came down upon him, he would turn his attention away from us and we too would not address him; the condition of his blessed face would change, and he would experience difficulty from it. When the state of revelation ended, he said: "Take the ruling from me." We said: "Very well, O Messenger of Allah!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty has appointed a way for such women: if an unmarried man commits fornication with an unmarried woman, he will be given a hundred lashes and a year of exile; and if a married man commits adultery with a married woman, they will be given a hundred lashes and then stoned." The narrator al-Hasan says: I do not know whether
this is part of the narration or not: he said: "If people bear witness that the two were found under one blanket, and they do not testify to their intercourse, then they will be given a hundred lashes and their heads will be shaved."
(Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Part of this narration is mentioned in the "Sahih".
Abdullah bin Ahmad recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Qabisah bin Hurayth reports this statement from Sayyiduna Salamah bin al-Muhabbiq (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take the ruling from me, take the ruling from me! Allah Almighty has stated a ruling for such women: if an unmarried man commits fornication with an unmarried woman, the punishment will be a hundred lashes and a year of exile; and if a married man commits adultery with a married woman, the punishment will be a hundred lashes and stoning."
Ahmad recorded it. Its chain contains al-Fadl bin Dalham, who is thiqah (trustworthy), but he erred in this hadith, as has been mentioned.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) carried out stoning, and the practice of these two (that is, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr and Sayyiduna Umar, may Allah be pleased with them) is Sunnah.
Abu Ya'la recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) says: When the verse on the ruling of stoning was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he was among his Companions. When revelation came down upon him, a state like sleep would come over him. When the revelation ended, he sat up straight and said: "Allah Almighty has stated the ruling for such women: if a married man commits adultery with a married woman, he will be given a hundred lashes and stoned; and if an unmarried man commits fornication with an unmarried woman, they will be given a hundred lashes and exiled for a year." Some people said to Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him): "O Abu Thabit! The ruling on the hadd punishments has been revealed. What do you think: if you were to find a man with your wife, what would you do?" He said: "I would strike him with the sword until both of them went still. Am I to go and gather four men? By then that wretch will have fulfilled his need and gone. Then I would come and say: 'I saw so-and-so doing such-and-such', and the people would flog me and never accept my testimony." The people laughed. Then the people gathered with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! Have you not seen Abu Thabit? We said such-and-such to him, and he replied with such-and-such." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The sword suffices as a witness." Then he said: "Were it not that I fear that the intoxicated person or the hot-tempered people would follow one another (in doing the same)." The people said: "O Messenger of Allah! He has the most intense jealousy of all people." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "He is intensely jealous, I am more protectively jealous than him, and Allah Almighty is more protectively jealous than me; that is why He has prescribed the hadd punishments." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: The beginning of this narration is reported in the "Sahih".
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains al-Fadl bin Dalham, who is thiqah (trustworthy); this narration was declared munkar (rejected) from him through this chain only. The rest of its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). The hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) will come later under Surah al-Nur.

Sayyidah al-Ajma' (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When the old man and the old woman (that is, a married man and a married woman) commit fornication, then flog them both without fail, in return for the pleasure they took."
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) says concerning an unmarried man who commits fornication with an unmarried woman that both of them will be given a hundred lashes and both will be exiled for a year.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain is broken (munqati'), and there is weakness in it.
