Amir al-Sha'bi narrates: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, some people became apostates. Some people said: "We will pray, but we will not pay zakah." The people said to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): "Will you accept this from them?" Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "If they refuse to give me even a young goat, I will fight them over it." Then he sent Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him). Adi bin Hatim came to al-Yamamah with a thousand men of the tribe of Tayyi'. The narrator says: Banu Amir had killed the officials appointed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and burned them with fire, so Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him): "Kill Banu Amir and burn them with fire." He did so, until the women cried out. Then he went on until he reached the water, and they came out to him and said: "Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest); we bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and we bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah." When he heard this, he held back from them. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) ordered him to march on until he reached al-Hirah, and then proceed to Syria. When he reached al-Hirah, he wrote to the people of Persia, and then said: "I would like not to leave until I have struck terror into them." So he raided until he reached Sura, where he killed and took captives; then he raided Ayn al-Tamr, killed and took captives; then he went on to Syria. Amir al-Sha'bi says: Ibn Buqaylah brought out the letter of Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) and showed it to me. In it was written: "In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. From Khalid bin al-Walid to the marzubans (commanders) of Persia. Peace be upon whoever follows guidance. I praise Allah, besides whom there is no god, with a praise (for His act) that broke your unity, scattered your assembly, weakened your might and stripped away your kingdom. When this letter of mine reaches you, accept protection (dhimmah) from me, pay me the jizyah, and send me hostages. Otherwise, by Allah besides whom there is no god, I will meet you with a people who love death as you love life. Peace be upon whoever follows guidance."
Abu Ya'la recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Mujalid, who is da'if (weak), though he has been declared thiqah (trustworthy).

Muhammad bin Ishaq narrates: When Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) had finished with al-Yamamah, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Sayyiduna al-Ala' bin al-Hadrami (may Allah be pleased with him) to Bahrain. Sayyiduna al-Ala' was the one whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had sent to al-Mundhir bin Sawa al-Abdi, and al-Mundhir had accepted Islam. Sayyiduna al-Ala' stayed there as the commander appointed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Rabi'ah in Bahrain apostatised, among the Arabs who apostatised, except al-Jarud bin Amr, for he remained firm upon Islam, and those of his people who followed him also remained firm upon Islam. Rabi'ah gathered in Bahrain, having apostatised, and said: "Kingship will return to the family of al-Mundhir." They spoke about this with al-Mundhir bin al-Nu'man bin al-Mundhir, who was called al-Gharur (the Deceiver). Later, when he had accepted Islam and the people had accepted Islam, he used to say: "I am not al-Gharur (the Deceiver); rather, I am al-Maghrur (the deceived)." When the people of Rabi'ah gathered in Bahrain, Sayyiduna al-Ala' bin al-Hadrami (may Allah be pleased with him) marched against them, and Sayyiduna Thumamah bin Uthal al-Hanafi (may Allah be pleased with him) came to reinforce him; he had become a Muslim and his people had also become Muslims. When al-Ala' bin al-Hadrami made Thumamah commander, those of Banu Suhaym who were with him set out with him, until they waded through the sea to Rabi'ah. Rabi'ah came out against them and besieged them at Juwatha, a fortress in Bahrain, until the Muslims were close to perishing from hardship. Concerning this situation, Abdullah bin Hadhaf al-Amiri composed these verses: "Will you not convey a message to Abu Bakr and to all the young men of Madinah: do you have any concern for young men of yours who are all besieged at Juwatha? We have put our trust in the Most Merciful, and we have found that help belongs to those who put their trust (in Him)." Then Abdullah bin Hadhaf said: "Let me go down from the fortress and I will bring you news." With Abdullah bin Hadhaf there was a woman of Banu Ijl. He came down from the fortress, and the people seized him and asked: "Who are your people?" He stated his lineage and began to call out loudly: "O Abjar!" That man was among the people. Abjar came, recognised him and said: "What is the matter with you?" He said: "I am perishing from hunger." So he gave him food and water. He then said: "Give me a mount and let me go my way." So he went and gave him a mule to ride and said: "Go about your business." When Abdullah bin Hadhaf had left them, he returned to his companions and told them that the enemy were drunk and had no strength. So Sayyiduna al-Ala' bin al-Hadrami (may Allah be pleased with him), with the Muslims who were with him, both Arabs and non-Arabs, attacked them by night and killed them in great numbers, until the enemy were routed.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators up to Ibn Ishaq are thiqat (trustworthy).

Urwah narrates: Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Sayyiduna al-Ala' bin al-Hadrami (may Allah be pleased with him) with an army of the Muslims against the people of Bahrain, who had refused to pay the jizyah that they used to pay to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when Sayyiduna al-Ala' bin al-Hadrami (may Allah be pleased with him) had conquered their land and made peace with them on the basis of the jizyah. When they refused to pay the right of Allah Almighty in their wealth, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) sent Sayyiduna al-Ala' bin al-Hadrami (may Allah be pleased with him) to them. He set out towards them, and between Sayyiduna al-Ala' (may Allah be pleased with him) and them there was the sea, until they walked through it on foot, crossing in this way at a place where ships used to sail before that and still sail today. Sayyiduna al-Ala' bin al-Hadrami (may Allah be pleased with him) fought them, and Allah Almighty gave him victory over them, and they accepted that they would pay the right of Allah Almighty from their wealth as before.
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Ibn Lahi'ah, whose narrations are hasan (good), and there is weakness in him.

Muhammad bin Sallam al-Jumahi narrates: Abu Ubaydah said that Dirar bin al-Azwar was the one who killed Malik bin Nuwayrah. About this, Mutammim bin Nuwayrah composed these verses, alluding to Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid: "What an excellent slain man, when the winds howl from every side among the thorn trees, is the one you killed, O Ibn al-Azwar! How excellent was the wearer of the armour when you met him, and how excellent a refuge for the night visitor seeking his fire! Generous with the gaming arrows when in high spirits, sweet-natured, his wealth lawfully gained, never treacherous. He did not wear indecency beneath his garments; hard to lead, chaste of waist-wrapper. Did you invite him in the name of Allah and then kill him? Had he called you under a pledge of protection, he would not have betrayed it. Excellent were the horsemen on the day when the horsemen of Fihr left (him) in the dark dust." It is also narrated: "in the dark murk."

Sayyiduna Khuraym bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "This is white al-Hirah, which has been shown to me, and this is al-Shayma' bint Buqaylah al-Azdiyyah, riding a grey mule and wrapped in a black veil." The narrator says: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, if we enter al-Hirah and find her in this condition, will she be mine?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "She is yours." The narrator says: Then the Arabs apostatised, but no one from the tribe of Tayyi' apostatised. We kept fighting the people of Qays for the sake of Islam, among them Uyaynah bin Hisn, and we kept fighting Tulayhah bin Khuwaylid al-Faq'asi. Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid praised us, and among what he said were these verses: "May Allah reward Tayyi' on our behalf with the best reward, in their lands, on the battlefield of heroes. They are the bearers of the banners of generosity and kindness, when the east wind sweeps away every tent. They struck Qays for the sake of the religion, after (Qays) had answered the caller of darkness and blindness." Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) set out against Musaylimah, and we set out with him. When we had finished with Musaylimah and his companions, we came towards the region of Basrah. We saw Hurmuz at Kazimah with a huge army, and there was no greater enemy of the Arabs than Hurmuz. The narrator Abu al-Sakan says: He is proverbial; the Arabs say: "More disbelieving than Hurmuz." Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) came out before him and called for single combat. Hurmuz came out to face him, and Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) killed him. He wrote to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) about it, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) awarded Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) the spoils of Hurmuz; the value of Hurmuz's cap alone came to one hundred thousand. Then we travelled by the road of al-Taraf until we entered al-Hirah. The first to meet us there was al-Shayma' bint Buqaylah, riding a grey mule with a black veil, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had said. I took hold of her and said: "This woman was granted to me by the Messenger of Allah." Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) asked me for proof of this. I presented the proof to him, and he handed the woman over to me. Her brother, Abd al-Masih, came to us and said to me: "Sell her to me." I said: "By Allah, I will not reduce anything from one thousand." So he gave me one thousand dirhams. It was said to me: "Had you said one hundred thousand, he would have given you that too." I said: "I did not think there was any wealth greater than one thousand." In narrations other than this one it is mentioned that the two witnesses were Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) (who testified in favour of this man).
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a group of narrators whom I do not know. A hadith with this meaning has already passed, narrated from Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him), in the chapter on fighting the Persians and the Romans, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih. I have mentioned
this narration here because it relates to the fighting against the apostates.

Muhammad bin Sirin narrates: On the day of the battle against Musaylimah, a man who was called 'the Donkey of al-Yamamah' came face to face with Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). He was a very tall man with a white sword in his hand. Sayyiduna al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) was a short man. Sayyiduna al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him) struck at his legs with the sword; his blow seemed to miss, and the man fell on the back of his neck. He says: Then I sheathed my sword and took up his sword. I struck only a single blow with it before it broke, so I threw it away and took up my own sword.
Al-Tabarani recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih, except that Ibn Sirin did not live in the time of Sayyiduna al-Bara' bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). The narration about al-Rajjal bin Unfuwah, from Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him), concerning his foretelling of hidden matters, will come later.
