Sayyiduna Khuraym bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "This is white al-Hirah, which has been shown to me, and this is al-Shayma' bint Buqaylah al-Azdiyyah, riding a grey mule and wrapped in a black veil." The narrator says: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, if we enter al-Hirah and find her in this condition, will she be mine?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "She is yours." The narrator says: Then the Arabs apostatised, but no one from the tribe of Tayyi' apostatised. We kept fighting the people of Qays for the sake of Islam, among them Uyaynah bin Hisn, and we kept fighting Tulayhah bin Khuwaylid al-Faq'asi. Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid praised us, and among what he said were these verses: "May Allah reward Tayyi' on our behalf with the best reward, in their lands, on the battlefield of heroes. They are the bearers of the banners of generosity and kindness, when the east wind sweeps away every tent. They struck Qays for the sake of the religion, after (Qays) had answered the caller of darkness and blindness." Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) set out against Musaylimah, and we set out with him. When we had finished with Musaylimah and his companions, we came towards the region of Basrah. We saw Hurmuz at Kazimah with a huge army, and there was no greater enemy of the Arabs than Hurmuz. The narrator Abu al-Sakan says: He is proverbial; the Arabs say: "More disbelieving than Hurmuz." Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) came out before him and called for single combat. Hurmuz came out to face him, and Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) killed him. He wrote to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) about it, and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) awarded Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) the spoils of Hurmuz; the value of Hurmuz's cap alone came to one hundred thousand. Then we travelled by the road of al-Taraf until we entered al-Hirah. The first to meet us there was al-Shayma' bint Buqaylah, riding a grey mule with a black veil, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had said. I took hold of her and said: "This woman was granted to me by the Messenger of Allah." Sayyiduna Khalid (may Allah be pleased with him) asked me for proof of this. I presented the proof to him, and he handed the woman over to me. Her brother, Abd al-Masih, came to us and said to me: "Sell her to me." I said: "By Allah, I will not reduce anything from one thousand." So he gave me one thousand dirhams. It was said to me: "Had you said one hundred thousand, he would have given you that too." I said: "I did not think there was any wealth greater than one thousand." In narrations other than this one it is mentioned that the two witnesses were Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) (who testified in favour of this man).
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains a group of narrators whom I do not know. A hadith with this meaning has already passed, narrated from Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him), in the chapter on fighting the Persians and the Romans, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih. I have mentioned
this narration here because it relates to the fighting against the apostates.
