What to say when putting on a new garment

Abu Matar narrates that he saw Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) come to a young boy and buy a shirt from him for three dirhams. He put it on, and it reached from his wrists to his ankles. While putting it on he recited: "All praise belongs to Allah Almighty, who has granted me clothing with which I adorn myself among people and with which I cover my private parts." He was asked: "Are you saying this on your own account, or do you narrate it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?" He said: "This is something I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite this when putting on clothes:
'All praise belongs to Allah Almighty, who has granted me clothing with which I may adorn myself among people and with which I may cover my private parts.'"
Ahmad and Abu Ya'la recorded it, though he narrated these words: I was with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). We came to the great market, and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) went to an elderly man among them and said: "O elderly man! Give me a good deal on a shirt for three dirhams." He said: "Certainly, O Commander of the Faithful!" When Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saw that he had recognised him, he did not buy anything from him; then he went to a young boy. After this the narrator narrated the report as before.

In one narration the words are: "When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) put on a new garment." Its chain contains Mukhtar bin Nafi', who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) put on new clothes and recited this supplication: "All praise belongs to Allah Almighty, who has given me what covers my private parts and has given me adornment among His servants." Then he related that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) put on new clothes, he would recite words like these.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains Abu Dawud al-A'ma, who is matruk (abandoned).

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When Allah Almighty bestows a blessing on a servant and that servant knows that this blessing has come from Allah Almighty, Allah Almighty records gratitude for him on account of it, before the servant praises Him for that blessing. And when a servant commits a sin and then feels remorse over it, Allah Almighty records his forgiveness before he seeks forgiveness. And when a servant buys a new garment for a dinar or half a dinar and praises Allah Almighty while putting it on, the garment will not yet have reached his knees before Allah Almighty forgives him."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains Sulayman bin Dawud al-Minqari, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A person from my Ummah will come to the market and buy a shirt for half a dinar or a third of a dinar, then praise Allah Almighty while putting it on, and the shirt will not yet have reached his knees before he is forgiven."
Al-Tabarani recorded it. Its chain contains Ja'far bin al-Zubayr, who is matruk (abandoned).
