Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out, and he too set out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); they were heading towards Makkah. When they reached the valley of al-Kharrar at al-Juhfah, Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) began to take a bath. He was a man of fair complexion, with a handsome body and skin. Amir bin Rabi'ah, who belonged to Banu Adi bin Ka'b, saw him bathing and said: I have never seen anything like what I have seen today, not even the skin of a secluded maiden. Thereupon Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) fell ill. He was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and it was said: O Messenger of Allah, will you do something for Sahl? By Allah, he neither raises his head nor regains consciousness. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you suspect anyone with regard to him?" The people said: Amir bin Rabi'ah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called Amir bin Rabi'ah, expressed his anger with him, and said: "On what basis would one of you kill his brother? When you saw something that pleased you, why did you not invoke blessing?" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Wash yourself!" So he washed his face, both his arms, both his elbows, both his knees, the edges of his feet and the inner part of his waist-wrapper in a bowl. Then that water was poured over that man; it was poured over his head and his back, and then the bowl was put behind him, and that was done to him. Then Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) set off with the people as though no affliction had ever befallen him.
Ahmad and al-Tabarani recorded it, and he added these words: "And he drank from that water."

Hadith Takhrij «

In a narration of al-Tabarani there are also these words: A man from the Ansar passed by him, and in this narration there are these words: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a person sees something in his brother that pleases him, whether it relates to his person or to his wealth, what prevents him from invoking blessing for him? Indeed, the evil eye is real." The narrators of Ahmad are the narrators of the Sahih, and there is weakness in the chains of al-Tabarani.

Sayyiduna Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he set out with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When they reached al-Kharrar, he entered the water to bathe; he was a handsome, radiant man. Amir bin Rabi'ah passed by him and said: I have never seen beauty like today's, nor such (beautiful) skin, not even that of a secluded maiden. At that very moment Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) fell down unconscious. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed for him and said: "On what basis would a person kill his brother? Whom do you suspect with regard to him?" The people said: Amir bin Rabi'ah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had Amir summoned, and he called for a vessel containing water. He commanded Amir, and Amir washed his face in that water, washed both his arms, washed both his knees and washed the edges of his feet. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of the folds of Amir's waist-wrapper and dipped them in the water. Then he poured that water over Sahl's head and turned the vessel upside down behind him. Then Sayyiduna Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up as though nothing had been wrong with him.

In one narration there are these words: "Indeed, the evil eye is real."
Al-Tabarani recorded it with two chains, the narrators of one of which are the narrators of the Sahih, except for Muhammad bin Abi Umamah, and he is thiqah (trustworthy). He narrated the hadith from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) just as Ibn Majah narrated something similar, except that in it there are these additional words: The narrator says: I think the narration contains these words: "The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded him, and he took a few sips from it." The narrators of this narration are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Amir bin Rabi'ah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sahl bin Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him) and I set out to look for donkeys. In one place we found the donkeys and also found a pool of water. The narrator says: Each of us felt shy to bathe while someone was watching him, so Sahl screened himself from me. When he saw that he was out of sight, he took off the cloak he had on him, worn as a jubbah, and entered the water. When I looked at him, his physique pleased me, and my eye struck him. A trembling seized him while he was still in the water. I called him, but he did not answer me. I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Remove its heat, its cold and its pain." Then he said: "Stand up!" When he stood up, he said: "When a person sees something that pleases him in himself, in his wealth or in his brother, he should pray for blessing, for the evil eye is real." (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: Ibn Majah reported only this part of this narration: "The evil eye is real."
Al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Umayyah bin Hind, and he is mastur (of unknown standing), and no one has declared him da'if (weak); the remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.

رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ وَرِجَالُهُ إِلَى الزُّهْرِيِّ رِجَالُ الصَّحِيحِ .
Ibn Shihab says: The method of the bath that I found our scholars practising is this: the man who has struck his companion with the evil eye will be brought, and a bowl containing water will be brought to him, and it will be held up for him a little above the ground. The one who struck his companion with the evil eye will put his right hand into the water, then pour water over his face, letting it fall into the bowl; he will do this once. Then he will put his left hand into the water and pour water once over his right arm, which will run back into the bowl. Then he will put his right hand in and with it wash his left hand once; both hands are to be washed up to the elbows. Then he will put both hands into the water and wash his chest with a single pouring, the remaining water going into the bowl. Then he will put his left hand into that water, scoop up water and pour it over the back of his right hand; he will pour once, so that the remaining water goes into the bowl. Then he will put his left hand in and with it pour water once over the elbow of his right arm, the remaining water going into the bowl, and he will take his hand up to his neck (perhaps what is meant here is that he will take it up to the elbow). Then he will do the same with his left elbow. Then he will do the same with the top of his right foot, starting from the roots of his toes, and then do the same with his left foot. Then he will put his left hand into the vessel and pour water on the back of his right knee, then do the same with his left knee. Then he will dip the inner part of his waist-wrapper, from the right side, into the water. Then the one holding the bowl will stand up and take the bowl, and he will pour water over his right knee.
