Irak bin Malik states that Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Formerly, in the Days of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah), Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was the most beloved of people to me. When he proclaimed his prophethood and went to Madinah, Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) came for the Hajj season, while he was a disbeliever at that time. He saw a robe of Dhu Yazan being sold, so he bought it for fifty dinars in order to give it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as a gift. Then he brought it with him to Madinah, wishing that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would accept it as a gift, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not accept it. The narrator Ubaydullah says: I think the narration also contains these words: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: We do not accept anything from the polytheists; however, if you wish, we will take it for its price. So when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) refused to accept my gift, I gave it to him (that is, in return for its price).
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, who added these words: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wore it. I saw him come to the pulpit wearing it, and that day I did not see anything more beautiful than him in that robe. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave it to Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him). When Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) saw Sayyiduna Usamah bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) wearing it, he said: O Usamah! Are you wearing the robe of Dhu Yazan? He said: Yes! I am better than Dhu Yazan, and my father is better than his father. Sayyiduna Hakim (may Allah be pleased with him) states: Then I went to the people of Makkah and told them what Sayyiduna Usamah (may Allah be pleased with him) had said, and they were greatly amazed. The chain of this narration is jayyid (good), and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy). It also has another chain, which will come in the chapter on the Signs of Prophethood in a better and clearer form than this one, concerning the description of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
