Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Once we were reciting the Qur'an; among us were a non-Arab, an Arab, a black man and a white man. Meanwhile the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us and said: "You are in the best of states: you are reciting the Book of Allah, and the Messenger of Allah is among you. Soon people will come who will shape and polish it as a cup is shaped and polished; they will take its reward hastily (that is, in this world) and will not wish to take it later (that is, in the Hereafter)."
Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains Ibn Lahi'ah, whose hadith is hasan (good), though he has been criticised.

In a narration of Ahmad the wording is: Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to us and said: "Among you is one who is better than you." By this the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) meant himself. "And you recite the Book of Allah; among you are the red-skinned and the white-skinned, the non-Arab and the Arab." After this the narrator mentioned the rest of the narration as before.

Abu Sallam narrates: Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Shibl (may Allah be pleased with him): "Teach the people what you have heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." So he gathered the people and said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Learn the Qur'an, and once you have learned it, do not go to extremes regarding it, do not turn away from it in neglect, do not eat (earn a living) by it, and do not seek to amass (wealth) by it." After this the narrator mentioned the whole hadith, which will come later as a complete narration, if Allah wills.
Ahmad recorded it, Abu Ya'la recorded it in abridged form, and al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna al-Tufayl bin Amr al-Dawsi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) taught me the Qur'an, and I gave him a bow as a gift. The next morning he went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), wearing the bow hung around his neck. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "You have hung it on yourself from Hell." I submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! We are people who, when we are present at a meal, eat from it." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever is prepared for you, you eat it in exchange for your share (of the Hereafter); but whatever is prepared for someone else and you are present there, then eat from it; there is no harm in that."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat; its chain contains Abdullah bin Sulayman bin Umayr, and I have not found anyone who has written his biography, and I do not think he met Sayyiduna al-Tufayl (may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: One of the military expeditions sent out by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out, and they passed by one of the Arab tribes. Those people asked them: "We have heard that your master has brought light and healing?" The Companions replied: "Yes! He has brought light and healing." The tribesmen said: "We have a man whom Satan has driven out of his senses, and this is his condition." (Here the narrator is in doubt about one word.) A man from the Ansar said: "Bring him to me." That Ansari recited Surah al-Fatihah over the man three times as a ruqyah, and the man recovered. Those people brought sheep to the Companions. One of the Companions said: "It is not lawful for you to take payment for the Qur'an." Another of them said: "This is an honour by which you have been honoured; it is not payment for the Qur'an." Then they slaughtered an animal, and some of the Companions ate its meat, while those who had not eaten said: "(We will not eat its meat) until we return and ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about it." When they returned, the man to whom the sheep had been given as a gift submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! We passed by the tribe of so-and-so, and they said: 'Your master has brought healing and light.' We said: 'Yes! He has brought healing and light.' They said: 'We have a man whom Satan has driven out of his senses.' So I said: 'Bring him to me.' Then I recited Surah al-Fatihah over him three times as a ruqyah, and he recovered. They brought sheep to me, and one of my companions said: 'It is not lawful for you to eat it.'" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who taught you that these are words of ruqyah?" The narrator says: I said: "I knew that I was doing ruqyah with the speech of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever gains something by a false ruqyah (does gain it); you have gained it rightfully by a true ruqyah. Eat yourself and feed your companions as well."
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Umar bin Isma'il bin Mujalid, who is a kadhdhab (liar) and matruk (abandoned).

It is reported about Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that there was a man with him whom he used to teach the Qur'an. He said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "My companion whom you have seen, who was with me, bought a bow and gave it to me as a gift. Should I take it from him?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No!" He waited for some time until a year had passed, then he came again and said: "O Messenger of Allah! May I take that bow?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No!" Then he waited for some time, and then he submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! May I take that bow?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No!" He submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! Should I not take it, so that it may be counted as equipment in the cause of Allah Almighty?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Awf! Do you want that, on the Day of Resurrection when you come before Allah Almighty, there should be an ember of Hell between your shoulders?"
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Muhammad bin Isma'il bin Ayyash, who is da'if (weak).

Al-Muthanna bin Wa'il narrates: I came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Bishr (may Allah be pleased with him). He passed his hand over my head and placed my hand on his forearm. A man asked him about the fee of a teacher, and he said: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with a bow slung over his shoulder. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) liked it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How fine your bow is! Did you buy it?" He submitted: "No! A man whose son I taught the Qur'an gave it to me as a gift." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Would you like Allah Almighty to put a bow made of fire around your neck?" He submitted: "No!" The narrator says: (Either the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:) "Return it," (or: they returned it).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: Among the captives of (the Battle of) Badr there were some people who could not pay a ransom, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set their ransom as teaching the children of the Ansar to write. One day one of those boys came crying to his father. His father asked: "What has happened to you?" He replied: "My teacher hit me." His father said: "That vile man wants to take revenge for Badr. By Allah! He (the boy) will never go to him again."
Ahmad recorded it from Ali bin Asim, who made many mistakes and errors, though Ahmad declared him trustworthy.
