رَوَاهُ الْبَزَّارُ ، وَفِيهِ عُمَرُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ مُجَالِدٍ ، وَهُوَ كَذَّابٌ مَتْرُوكٌ .
Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: One of the military expeditions sent out by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out, and they passed by one of the Arab tribes. Those people asked them: "We have heard that your master has brought light and healing?" The Companions replied: "Yes! He has brought light and healing." The tribesmen said: "We have a man whom Satan has driven out of his senses, and this is his condition." (Here the narrator is in doubt about one word.) A man from the Ansar said: "Bring him to me." That Ansari recited Surah al-Fatihah over the man three times as a ruqyah, and the man recovered. Those people brought sheep to the Companions. One of the Companions said: "It is not lawful for you to take payment for the Qur'an." Another of them said: "This is an honour by which you have been honoured; it is not payment for the Qur'an." Then they slaughtered an animal, and some of the Companions ate its meat, while those who had not eaten said: "(We will not eat its meat) until we return and ask the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about it." When they returned, the man to whom the sheep had been given as a gift submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! We passed by the tribe of so-and-so, and they said: 'Your master has brought healing and light.' We said: 'Yes! He has brought healing and light.' They said: 'We have a man whom Satan has driven out of his senses.' So I said: 'Bring him to me.' Then I recited Surah al-Fatihah over him three times as a ruqyah, and he recovered. They brought sheep to me, and one of my companions said: 'It is not lawful for you to eat it.'" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who taught you that these are words of ruqyah?" The narrator says: I said: "I knew that I was doing ruqyah with the speech of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever gains something by a false ruqyah (does gain it); you have gained it rightfully by a true ruqyah. Eat yourself and feed your companions as well."
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Umar bin Isma'il bin Mujalid, who is a kadhdhab (liar) and matruk (abandoned).
