It is reported about Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that there was a man with him whom he used to teach the Qur'an. He said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "My companion whom you have seen, who was with me, bought a bow and gave it to me as a gift. Should I take it from him?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No!" He waited for some time until a year had passed, then he came again and said: "O Messenger of Allah! May I take that bow?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No!" Then he waited for some time, and then he submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! May I take that bow?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No!" He submitted: "O Messenger of Allah! Should I not take it, so that it may be counted as equipment in the cause of Allah Almighty?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Awf! Do you want that, on the Day of Resurrection when you come before Allah Almighty, there should be an ember of Hell between your shoulders?"
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Muhammad bin Isma'il bin Ayyash, who is da'if (weak).
