Abu al-Tufayl states: I said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): "Your people claim that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the Sa'i between Safa and Marwah, and that this is a Sunnah." He said: "They have spoken the truth. When Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was commanded to perform the rites, Satan confronted him at a place of the Sa'i. He raced with Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him), and Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) outran him. Then Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) took him to Jamrat al-Aqabah, and Satan confronted him, so he threw seven pebbles at him until he went away. Then he confronted him at the middle Jamrah, and he threw seven pebbles at him. It was there that Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) laid Sayyiduna Isma'il (peace be upon him) down on his forehead. Sayyiduna Isma'il (peace be upon him) was wearing a white shirt. He said: 'O my dear father! I have no other garment in which you could shroud me, so take it off and shroud me in it.' When Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) began to take it off, a call came from behind him: 'O Ibrahim! You have fulfilled the vision.' Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) turned around, and there was a white, horned ram with large dark eyes." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) states: "I remember that we used to look for rams of that kind." The narrator states: "Then Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) took him to the farthest Jamrah. Satan confronted him, and he threw seven pebbles at him until he went away. Then Sayyiduna Jibril took him to Mina and said: 'This is Mina.'" Yunus says: "That is, the place where people halt." "Then he brought him to Muzdalifah and said: 'This is al-Mash'ar al-Haram.' Then he took him to Arafah." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Do you know why Arafah was given this name?" I replied: "No." He said: "Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) asked Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him): 'Have you recognised (it)?' (Here the narrator named Yunus reported one word differently.) Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) replied: 'Yes!'" Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: "For this reason the place was named Arafah." Then he said: "Do you know how the Talbiyah came about?" I replied: "How did it come about?" He said: "When Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was commanded to proclaim the Hajj among the people, all the mountains lowered themselves before him and the towns were raised up before him, and he proclaimed the Hajj among them."
Ahmad and al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir recorded it, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) intended to sacrifice his son, Sayyiduna Ishaq (peace be upon him) (this is what is mentioned in the text, but the correct position is that he intended to sacrifice Sayyiduna Isma'il (peace be upon him)), and he said to his father: 'O my dear father, when you are about to sacrifice me, tie me up, because if I struggle, drops of my blood will splash on you.' Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) tied him up. When he had sharpened the knife and intended to sacrifice him, it was called out to him from behind: 'O Ibrahim! You have fulfilled the vision.'"

Then he came to the middle Jamrah, and Iblis was there as well. Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) told him, so he struck him with seven pebbles, and he sank into the ground. Then he came to the third Jamrah and did the same there. Then he came to Muzdalifah, and then he recited the talbiyah from Arafat. Imam al-Tabarani recorded all of these narrations in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. Their chain contains Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, who had become mukhtalit (his memory deteriorated).
