Sayyiduna Bashir bin al-Khasasiyyah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Shall I fast on Friday and not speak to anyone on that day?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do not fast on Friday, except among days of which it is one. As for not speaking to anyone (that is, a fast of silence), by my life, that you speak and enjoin what is good or forbid what is evil is better than that you remain silent."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in this way. Ahmad recorded it from Layla, the wife of Sayyiduna Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him), that Sayyiduna Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). According to one view she is a female Companion. The narrators of this report are thiqat (trustworthy).

He said: "Come forward and eat from this food." We said: "O Messenger of Allah! We are fasting." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Did you fast yesterday?" We said: "No." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you intend to fast tomorrow?" We said: "No." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then come forward and eat, for Friday is not fasted on its own; it is to be taken as an Eid." Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him; the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had established brotherhood between the two of them. Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) slept at his house. Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' intended to get up at night to offer voluntary prayers, but Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) got up, went to him and did not let him do so until he slept, and the next day did not let him fast either. Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda' (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him about it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Uwaymir!
