Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: We came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a Friday, and he had food in front of him from which he was eating. He said: "Come forward and eat from this food." We said: "O Messenger of Allah! We are fasting." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Did you fast yesterday?" We said: "No." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do you intend to fast tomorrow?" We said: "No." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then come forward and eat, for Friday is not fasted on its own; it is to be taken as an Eid." (Allamah Haythami says:) I say: A hadith of Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) is reported in the Sahih in abridged form.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir and al-Mu'jam al-Awsat with the additional words: "It is to be taken as an Eid." Its chain contains Abdullah bin Sa'id bin Abi Sa'id al-Maqburi, and he is matruk (abandoned).
