Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever fasts one day in the path of Allah, outside Ramadan, is removed from Hell by the distance of a hundred years, which a trained horse (covers in a hundred years)."
Imam Abu Ya'la recorded it. Its chain contains a narrator, Zabban bin Fa'id, about whom much has been said, although he has been declared trustworthy.

In one narration the wording is: "(He places a trench) the distance of seventy years."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. The chain of the narration with seventy years contains a narrator, Baqiyyah; he is thiqah (trustworthy), but he is a mudallis (one who conceals defects in the chain). The chain of the first narration contains a narrator, Isa bin Sulayman al-Jurjani, and he is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Sufyan al-Azdi (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), narrated: Whoever fasts one day in the path of Allah, Allah Almighty removes that person from Hell by the distance of a hundred years. The narrator Habib asked Abu Bishr: "The distance of two hundred years?" Abu Bishr said to Aththamah bin Qays: "That is what I thought." Abdullah bin Sufyan said: "I will narrate to you the hadith I heard; I will not narrate to you what you narrate to me."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and something similar in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. I do not know the narrator Abu Bishr; its remaining narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The most virtuous of those who fight in the path of Allah is the one who serves them, then the one who brings them information (i.e. scouts), and the most (virtuous) of them all in rank and standing before Allah Almighty is the one who is fasting."
