Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 5179

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The most virtuous of those who fight in the path of Allah is the one who serves them, then the one who brings them information (i.e. scouts), and the most (virtuous) of them all in rank and standing before Allah Almighty is the one who is fasting." After this the narrator mentioned the full hadith; the complete report will come later in the chapter on Jihad, if Allah wills.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat. Its chain contains a narrator, Anbasah bin Mihran al-Haddad, and he is da'if (weak).
