Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a freed slave-woman who used to fast during the day and perform voluntary prayers at night. It was said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "She fasts during the day and keeps performing voluntary prayers at night." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Every deed has a period of zeal (that is, a person is energetic for it), and every zeal is followed by a lull (that is, an element of weakness or laziness). So whoever's lull leads towards my Sunnah will be rightly guided, and whoever's lull leads elsewhere will go astray."
This narration was recorded by Imam al-Bazzar, and its narrators are the narrators of the "Sahih".

Sayyidah Aishah Siddiqah (may Allah be pleased with her) says: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praying at night. I stood behind him and prayed following his (peace and blessings be upon him) prayer. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat, he shortened his standing, then he prayed two short rak'ahs, then he concluded with the salam. Then he stood up, prayed two rak'ahs, then concluded with the salam, and he let me hear the salam. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards me and said: "Bind yourself only to as many deeds as you are able to." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said this three times.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Mention was made before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of some people who worshipped with great exertion. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is the need of Islam and its vigour (that is, being energetic), and every vigour is followed by slackness. So whoever's leaving off (of deeds due to slackness) leads towards moderation, that is a good thing; and whoever's leaving off (of deeds due to slackness) leads towards sin, those are the ones who are ruined."
This narration was recorded by Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and Imam Ahmad recorded a similar narration. The narrators of Imam Ahmad are "thiqat" (trustworthy). Ibn Ishaq stated: "Abu al-Zubayr narrated the hadith to me," so in this way the tadlis (concealment in the chain) is removed.

قُلْتُ : وَتَأْتِي أَحَادِيثُ تُشْبِهُ هَذَا فِي النِّكَاحِ .
Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out of the house of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) and stopped at the door. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Kahilah! What has happened to you? Why is your condition so poor? Is Uthman not present at home?" That woman said: "Yes! He has not lain down on a bed for such-and-such a length of time (that is, he keeps performing voluntary prayers all night), and he keeps voluntary fasts during the day and does not leave any fast." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell him to come to me." When Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) came (home), that woman told him (that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, had asked for him). He set off towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and found the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the mosque. He came and sat with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face away from him. He began to weep and then said: "I have come to know that something about me has reached you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are you the one who fasts during the day and keeps performing voluntary prayers all night, and does not put his side on a bed all night?" Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I did that seeking good." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your eye has a share, and your body has a share. Keep (voluntary) fasts and also leave them, sleep and also perform voluntary prayers, and go to your wife as well. I keep (voluntary) fasts and also leave them, I sleep and I also perform (voluntary) prayer, and I am with women as well. Whoever adopts my Sunnah will be rightly guided, and whoever abandons it will go astray. Every deed has a period of energy, and every energy is followed by slackness. So whoever's slackness leads towards heedlessness, that will be ruin; and when the slackness leads towards the obligatory, then it will not harm the one who does so in any way. Do as many deeds as you are able to, for I have been sent with the upright and easy way. Do not load upon yourself the burden of the worship of your Lord, for you do not know how long your life will be."
This narration was recorded by Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Ali bin Yazid, who is da'if (weak). I say: Some hadiths resembling this narration will come in the chapter on marriage.

Sayyiduna Abu al-Tufayl Amir bin Wathilah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: A man passed by some people and greeted them with salam, and those people returned his greeting. When he had passed beyond them, one man among them said: "I dislike this man for the sake of Allah Almighty." The people of the gathering said: "By Allah! You have said an evil thing; you must make this clear to him. O so-and-so, get up," they said to one man among them, "and inform him about this." Their messenger went to that other man and told him what the first man had said. So that man turned back and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I passed by some people among whom was so-and-so. I greeted them with salam and they returned the greeting. When I had passed beyond them, one of them came to me and told me that so-and-so had said: 'By Allah! I hold enmity towards this man for the sake of Allah Almighty.' O Messenger of Allah! Call him and ask him for what reason he holds enmity towards me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called that man and asked him about what the other man had told him, and the man admitted it and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I did say that." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why do you hold enmity towards him?" The man said: "I am his neighbour and I keep well informed about him. By Allah! I have never seen him perform any (voluntary) prayer; this man only performs the obligatory prayer that every righteous and sinful person performs." The other man said: "O Messenger of Allah! Ask him whether he has ever seen me perform the prayer later than its time, or not perform the bowing or the prostration properly." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him, and he replied: "No!" Then that man said: "By Allah! I have never seen him keep a (voluntary) fast; he only fasts the month that every righteous and sinful person fasts." The other man said: "Ask him whether he has ever seen me being negligent in that fasting or falling short in any of its rights." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked that man, and he replied: "No!" Then that man said: "By Allah! I have never seen him give anything to someone who asks, nor have I ever seen him spend anything of his wealth in the way of Allah Almighty, except that he pays the zakah that every righteous and sinful person pays." The other man said: "O Messenger of Allah! Ask him whether I have ever withheld anything from the zakah, or ever haggled with the one who collects the zakah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked that man, and he said: "No!" Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Get up! I think that perhaps he (the one you dislike) is better than you."
This narration was recorded by Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir.
This narration has passed before, but here it is mentioned in a better form. Its narrators are the narrators of the "Sahih", except for Muzaffar bin Mudrik, who is "thiqah" (trustworthy) and thabt (firm).

Sayyiduna Wathilah bin al-Asqa' (may Allah be pleased with him) says: A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who was in a sorry state, cross-eyed, short-necked, lame, dark, left-handed, with little flesh on his shoulders and a wide space between his thighs. He said: "O Messenger of Allah! Tell me what Allah Almighty has made obligatory upon me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told him, and he said: "I will do this regularly for the sake of Allah Almighty and I will not add anything to the obligatory." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Why is that?" He said: "Because Allah Almighty has created me in a sorry state, cross-eyed, dark, left-handed, with little flesh on my shoulders and a wide space between my thighs." Then that man went away. Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Sayyiduna Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Where is the man who expressed displeasure with his Lord? He has expressed displeasure with a Generous Lord, so make him content." Sayyiduna Jibril said: "Tell him: 'Are you not pleased that on the Day of Resurrection you will be raised in the form of Sayyiduna Jibril (peace be upon him)?'" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for that man and said: "You expressed displeasure with a Generous Lord, and He has made you content. Are you not pleased that on the Day of Resurrection Allah Almighty will raise you in the form and shape of Jibril?" He said: "Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah!" Then he said: "Now I make a pledge in the name of Allah Almighty that whatever deed my body has the strength to do, by which Allah Almighty is pleased, I will do it."
This narration was recorded by Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, al-Ala bin Kathir al-Laythi, who is extremely "da'if" (weak).
