Majma al-Zawaid — Hadith 3569

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out of the house of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) and stopped at the door. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Kahilah! What has happened to you? Why is your condition so poor? Is Uthman not present at home?" That woman said: "Yes! He has not lain down on a bed for such-and-such a length of time (that is, he keeps performing voluntary prayers all night), and he keeps voluntary fasts during the day and does not leave any fast." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell him to come to me." When Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) came (home), that woman told him (that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, had asked for him). He set off towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and found the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the mosque. He came and sat with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face away from him. He began to weep and then said: "I have come to know that something about me has reached you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Are you the one who fasts during the day and keeps performing voluntary prayers all night, and does not put his side on a bed all night?" Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I did that seeking good." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Your eye has a share, and your body has a share. Keep (voluntary) fasts and also leave them, sleep and also perform voluntary prayers, and go to your wife as well. I keep (voluntary) fasts and also leave them, I sleep and I also perform (voluntary) prayer, and I am with women as well. Whoever adopts my Sunnah will be rightly guided, and whoever abandons it will go astray. Every deed has a period of energy, and every energy is followed by slackness. So whoever's slackness leads towards heedlessness, that will be ruin; and when the slackness leads towards the obligatory, then it will not harm the one who does so in any way. Do as many deeds as you are able to, for I have been sent with the upright and easy way. Do not load upon yourself the burden of the worship of your Lord, for you do not know how long your life will be."
This narration was recorded by Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains a narrator, Ali bin Yazid, who is da'if (weak). I say: Some hadiths resembling this narration will come in the chapter on marriage.
