Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: A man greeted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with salam while he was praying. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied with a gesture. When he said the salam (ending the prayer), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to that man: Previously we used to reply to the salam during the prayer, then we were forbidden from that.
Al-Bazzar recorded it; its chain contains Abdullah bin Salih, the scribe of al-Layth. Abd al-Malik bin Shu'ayb bin al-Layth declared him thiqah (trustworthy); he says: He is thiqah and ma'mun (reliable). But the Imams, namely Imam Ahmad and others, declared him weak.

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: Previously it was the practice of the people that when a man entered the mosque and found the people praying, he would ask the person beside him, and the other would tell him how much of the prayer had passed; so he would make it up accordingly, then stand and pray with the people. One day Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the mosque. The people indicated to him by gesture: You have missed such-and-such of the prayer. But he refused to pray (it first); he prayed with the people, then afterwards prayed what had passed before. This was mentioned before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Mu'adh has done well; you too should do as he has done.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir; its chain contains Ubaydullah bin Zahr narrating from Ali bin Yazid, and both of these narrators are da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying. I greeted him with salam, and he did not reply to me. Allamah al-Haythami says: I say: Imam al-Nasa'i (may Allah have mercy on him) recorded the narration of Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) that he greeted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with salam and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied to him; so this narration would be regarded as abrogating that one. And Allah knows best.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: I passed by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and greeted him with salam, and he replied to me with a gesture. Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat and al-Mu'jam al-Saghir, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih.
