Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Smiling does not break the prayer; laughing aloud breaks it."
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Saghir as marfu' and as mawquf (that is, in both ways), and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Mika'il passed by me with dust on his wing; he laughed on seeing me, so I smiled at him.

Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) relates: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying when a man entered (the mosque) and fell into a pit that was in the mosque; that man had weak eyesight. Many of those present laughed while they were praying. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that whoever had laughed should repeat the ablution and repeat the prayer.
