Sayyiduna Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with him), a relative of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) by marriage, narrates: Once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Ma'mar in the courtyard of the mosque; he was sitting in the posture of ihtiba' and had left the edge of his thigh uncovered. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: O Ma'mar! Cover your thigh, for the thigh is part of what must be covered ('awrah). Ahmad recorded it. In another narration from him, also recorded by Ahmad, he narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by Ma'mar, and I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); Ma'mar had both his thighs uncovered, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Ma'mar! Cover your thighs, for both thighs are part of what must be covered.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, except that in the first narration he recorded these words: "Indeed, the thigh is part of what must be covered." The narrators of Ahmad are thiqat (trustworthy).
