رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ فِي الْأَوْسَطِ وَرِجَالُهُ مُوَثَّقُونَ .
Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped at the market, and Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) was with him (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) let both his legs hang down into the well and moved the cloth off his thighs. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came and asked for permission. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Bilal! Give him permission to come in and give him the glad tidings of Paradise. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came in and sat on the right side of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he too let his legs hang down into the well and moved the cloth off his thighs. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came and also asked for permission, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Bilal! Give him permission and give him the glad tidings of Paradise. He came in and sat on the left side of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he too let his legs hang down into the well and moved the cloth off his thighs. Then Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came and asked for permission, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Bilal! Give him permission as well and give him the glad tidings of Paradise, but he will have to face a trial. Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came in and sat facing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him); he let his legs hang down into the well and moved the cloth off his thighs.
Al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat, and its narrators have been declared trustworthy.
