Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a servant remains sitting at his place of prayer after the prayer, the angels keep supplicating for mercy for him, and the angels' supplication for him is: 'O Allah, forgive him.' And if a man is sitting waiting for the prayer, the angels supplicate for mercy for him, and their supplication for that person is: 'O Allah, forgive him; O Allah, have mercy on him.'"
Imam Ahmad recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Ata' bin al-Sa'ib, who is thiqah (trustworthy), but he suffered from confusion (ikhtilat) in the last part of his life.

Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Performing ablution thoroughly at times when it is hard on oneself, taking many steps to go to the mosques, and waiting for one prayer after another wash away sins."
Imam Abu Ya'la and Imam al-Bazzar recorded it, and its narrators are the narrators of the Sahih. Imam al-Bazzar added these words at its beginning: "Shall I not guide you to that by which Allah Almighty wipes out sins?" In one of its two chains he added a person, Abu al-Ayyas, and he said: He is majhul (unknown). I say: This name is Abu al-Ayyas, with a "ya" and a "sin".

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The one who waits for one prayer after another is like a horseman whose horse gallops with him on its back in the path of Allah, and this is the greatest guarding of the frontier (ribat)."
Imam Ahmad and Imam al-Tabarani in al-Mu'jam al-Awsat recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Nafi' bin Sulayman al-Qurashi, whom Abu Hatim declared thiqah (trustworthy), and the remaining narrators of this report are the narrators of the Sahih.

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "A servant continues to be counted as being in prayer as long as he remains sitting at his place of prayer waiting for the prayer. The angels say: 'O Allah, forgive him; O Allah, have mercy on him,' until that servant gets up from there or ritual impurity (hadath) befalls him." The narrator says: I asked him: What is meant by ritual impurity befalling him? The teacher replied: I asked Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) this same question, and he replied that it is when he passes wind, silently or audibly.
Imam Ahmad recorded it, and its chain contains a narrator, Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an, about whom there is disagreement as to whether he can be used as evidence. Ibn Hibban mentioned him in the book al-Thiqat and stated that he narrates gharib (unusual) reports.

Sayyiduna Ubadah bin al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) reports from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Shall I not tell you about the things that become an expiation for sins? They said: Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Performing ablution thoroughly at times when it is hard on oneself, going to the mosques with many steps, and waiting for one prayer after another; this is ribat (preparedness, or guarding the frontier).
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it, and Imam al-Bazzar recorded something similar. Imam al-Bazzar's teacher, Khalid bin Yusuf al-Samti, transmitted it from his father, and they are da'if (weak); and the narrator Ishaq did not live in the time of Sayyiduna Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyiduna Jubayr bin Mut'im (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Walking on foot to the congregational prayer is an expiation for sins; performing ablution thoroughly in the cold, and waiting for one prayer after another (are also an expiation for sins)."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr al-Mulayki, who is da'if (weak).

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Dreams are glad tidings from Allah Almighty, and they are one of the seventy parts of prophethood. This fire of yours is one part of the seventy parts of the scorching heat of Hell. Whoever comes to the mosque and waits for the prayer is counted as being in prayer as long as ritual impurity does not befall him; and whoever waits for one prayer after another is counted as being in prayer as long as ritual impurity does not befall him."
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Ubayd bin Ishaq al-Attar, who is matruk (abandoned). Abu Hatim regarded him favourably, and Imam Ibn Hibban (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned him in the book al-Thiqat and stated that he narrates gharib (unusual) reports.

One of the women who gave the pledge of allegiance (that is, who accepted Islam at the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to us, and with him were his Companions from Banu Salamah. We presented food to him and he ate. Then we presented water for ablution to him and he performed ablution. Then he turned to his Companions and said: Shall I not tell you about the things that become an expiation for sins? The people said: Yes indeed! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Performing ablution thoroughly at times when it is hard on oneself, going to the mosques with many steps, and waiting for one prayer after another.
Imam Ahmad recorded it; among its narrators is a person who has not been named.

Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not guide you to that by which Allah Almighty erases faults and wipes out sins? The people said: Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Performing ablution thoroughly at times when it is hard on oneself, going to the mosques with many steps, and waiting for one prayer after another; this is ribat (that is, preparedness or guarding the frontier)."
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it. Another narration similar to it is also reported from this Companion, except that in place of the words "this is ribat" he recorded these words: "This is the ribat (that is, the preparation) of Paradise." The chain of the first narration contains a narrator, Shurahbil bin Sa'd, who is da'if (weak) according to the majority. Ibn Hibban mentioned him in the book al-Thiqat and recorded this hadith from him in his Sahih. The chain of the second narration contains a narrator, Yusuf bin Maymun al-Sabbagh, whom a group declared weak; Ibn Hibban and Abu Ahmad bin Adi called him thiqah (trustworthy), and Imam al-Bazzar says: He is salih al-hadith (acceptable in hadith).

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ate in the house of Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), or perhaps in the house of Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him), and said: "Some people of my Ummah will plunge into (wrongfully taking) what Allah Almighty has granted to His Messenger as fay' (spoils gained without fighting), and they will have no share other than it. And the expiation of sins (lies in these deeds): performing ablution thoroughly, going to the mosque with many steps, and waiting for one prayer after another."
Imam al-Bazzar recorded it, and its chain is sahih (authentic).

Abu Umayyah al-Thaqafi (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came out at the time of the Zuhr prayer and said: Stay in your places of prayer until I come to you. Then he came to us. When he had prayed Asr, he said: Shall I not tell you about something that the Companions of the Messenger of Allah did? We said: Yes indeed! He said: They prayed the first (that is, the Zuhr) prayer with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then they remained seated. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to them and asked: Are you still in the same state since then? The people said: Yes. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If only you had seen your Lord, how He opened a door in the heaven, showed the angels your sitting, and expressed His pride in you while you were waiting for the prayer. (Allamah al-Haythami says:) I say: A hadith of Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) is reported in the Sahih about the person who sits to remember Allah, and it does not mention waiting for the prayer.
Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir. He also recorded it from Abu Umayyah, from a man, from his uncle, who said: Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came out. Imam al-Bazzar also recorded it. I have not found anyone who mentions the narrator Abu Umayyah al-Thaqafi.

Imam al-Tabarani recorded it in al-Mu'jam al-Kabir, and Imam al-Bazzar also recorded it; its chain contains a narrator, Abdullah bin Isa al-Khazzaz, who is da'if (weak). I say: Hadiths have already passed in the chapter on purification about performing ablution thoroughly which indicate the virtue of waiting for the prayer, and some hadiths will come later in the chapter on specification, if Allah wills.
